Robert Wayne Earl (born June 2, 1985 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the SCL Tigers in the National League since 2019 . Earl previously played a few games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League .
Career
Robbie Earl was born in Chicago , but grew up with his grandparents in Los Angeles . There he learned to play ice hockey with the Jr. Kings , a youth team of the NHL organization of the Los Angeles Kings . At the age of 16, the attacking player was accepted into the USA Hockey's youth program , the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , where he played primarily for the U18 team in the North American Hockey League .

In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the sixth round at a total of 187th position by the Toronto Maple Leafs , but from 2003 to 2006 Earl played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison ice hockey team from the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team in which the later NHL players Joe Pavelski , Tom Gilbert and Jack Skille played, he won the US college championship in 2006. In the same season, the American completed his first professional games with the Toronto Marlies , a farm team of the Leafs from the AHL . For the next three years he was an integral part of the squad, but never reached the play-offs in any other season . On February 2, 2008, Earl finally made his debut in the NHL. In the Canadian duel between the Leafs and the Ottawa Senators , the versatile striker prepared a hit. There followed eight more missions for the team from Toronto in the North American elite class. In the following season, Earl switched to the organization of the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Ryan Hamilton , where he was first used in the farm team at the Houston Eros . After a successful season, the Eros failed only in the conference final against the Manitoba Moose . In the 2009/10 season , the striker was increasingly used for the wild in the NHL, with the Chicago native scored his first of a total of six goals in the NHL on November 15, 2009 against the Carolina Hurricanes .
Move to Europe (since 2011)
After another season in North America, where he mostly played in the AHL and reached the Calder Cup final with the Eros , he decided in 2011 to move to Europe. After an unsuccessful trial session at the KHL Club Dinamo Riga , Earl signed a contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg from the EBEL . In winter he also played on loan for HC Davos at the Spengler Cup . After a convincing performance in the course of the tournament, he was elected to the All-Star-Team and won the traditional tournament with the Davos team. Through its strong performances Earl recommended for exposure to a qualitatively stronger league and became the 2012/13 season of the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the National League A committed. In his first season he achieved the most goals and the most assists within the team. As a result, his contract was extended for two years. Nevertheless, he was released in the following season because his game philosophy did not match the realignment of the Rapperswiler . Two weeks later the league competitor EV Zug announced the commitment of the American. At the end of the 2014/15 season , the striker found himself among the top ten players in the main round for the third time in a row. In addition, he qualified with the EVZ for the first time for the play-offs of the NLA.
In the 2015/16 season he was initially under contract with Färjestad BK in the Svenska Hockeyligan , before he signed a contract with EHC Biel for a year and a half in January 2016 . With the Zealanders he finished the 2016/17 season in eighth place and thus qualified for the playoffs. He was also the team's best scorer with 39 points.
After three years at EHC Biel, he decided in December 2018 to switch to the SCL Tigers , which took place for the 2019/20 season. Earl signed a two-year deal with the Tigers.
Style of play
Robbie Earl stands out with his explosive sprint technique, and he also plays every game with a very high level of intensity, but the flexible striker, who can be used in any offensive position, is hardly injured. Outside of the ice cream, too, Earl has an impeccable work ethic and is always ambitious. But he sometimes acts too selfishly during a game and tries to finish the goal himself instead of involving his teammates. Roger Sigg, managing director of Rapperswil-Jona Lakers says about him: “Robbie Earl wants to fulfill missions, he lives ice hockey and is hungry for success. Not dogged, but focused and with a joy that releases strength. "
