The 2011/12 season of the Austrian Ice Hockey League began in September 2011. The defending champion was EC Red Bull Salzburg . In the playoff final, the EHC Linz prevailed against the EC KAC and won the Austrian championship title for the second time since 2003 .

The ten teams that had played in the league in the past three seasons competed again. In May 2011 it became known that the Czech club Orli Znojmo , which had played in the first division up to now , was very interested in a move to the EBEL. This was primarily based on the fact that the club could not raise the budget for a promotion to the extra league. On May 31, it was finally announced that the club was the eleventh team to join the EBEL. The team in the Czech 1st division should, however, continue to exist. The Czechs initially signed a three-year contract with the EBEL and want to start the first season with a budget of around one million euros and primarily encourage young Czech players.

A prerequisite for the participation of the Czechs in the EBEL was a regulation of the player registration and de-registration formalities. The Czech association, the ÖEHV and the IIHF agreed in mid-June that this would be handled by a sub-organization of the ÖEHV in the future.

At the beginning of June it was also announced that the Hungarian club Dab.Docler is aiming to participate in the EBEL in the long term. For the time being, however, the club has only called for participation in the National League and would like to continue to participate in the MOL League in parallel .

Farm teams

After the participation of the farm teams in the major league in the previous season had been quite successful, four of the six Austrian clubs had their second teams compete in the second highest division, the national league. Only the EC Red Bull Salzburg and the EC VSV decided not to let their farm teams take part. The latter reacted to the end of the league season by naming their team for the Tyrolean elite league.

Mode and regulations

Due to the now uneven number of teams, the mode of the event has been revised. A double round-trip round is now played in the basic round, with each team playing 40 games on 44 match days and pausing on four match days. Then the field of participants is divided: in the upper group the teams in ranks one to six determine the final placement for the playoffs, in the lower group the remaining five teams play for the two remaining playoff places. Bonus points are awarded in both groups based on the placements in the first round. This is followed by the playoffs with quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The mode with an additional intermediate round was already used in the 2007/08 season , but there was little approval from the fans because the intermediate round is comparatively meaningless for the upper group.

The start times of the games have also been postponed. It was negotiated with TV partner ServusTV that the Sunday games would now start at 5:30 p.m. instead of 6:00 p.m. in order to have more time for the subsequent magazine, which was only canceled a little later. Instead, the reporting will now take place on Monday evening as part of the "Talk in Hangar 7"; the changed start time remained. In the playoffs, however, the midweek games start at 8:30 pm instead of 7:15 pm, which means that the games end very late.

Transfers

With Thomas Koch , one of the key players left the club and returned to the EC KAC in his hometown of Klagenfurt. Likewise, Marco Pewal (EC VSV) left the club, a player who had been active in Salzburg since Salzburg joined the EBEL. Practically in exchange for the latter, Andreas Kristler, a talented young player from Villach, came to the Red Bulls.
After four years of working together, the Vienna Capitals replaced coach Kevin Gaudet against the Swede Tommy Samuelsson , who had already played as a player at the former Vienna club Wiener EV and had already coached the EBEL club HC Innsbruck in the 2004/05 season . With David Rodman's contract not renewed, he and his brother Marcel would not be under contract with the same club for the first time in several years. Young player Martin Ulmer moved to the National League B for HC Lausanne . Three DEL players joined the team : goalkeeper Sebastian Stefaniszin ( Nürnberg Ice Tigers ), Pat Kavanagh ( Iserlohn Roosters ) and Jon Insana (Iserlohn Roosters) strengthen the team. In addition, Jonathan Ferland was signed by the SAAM. In addition, Reinhard Divis was brought back to his hometown.
At the end of the season, the contract with coach Michael Stewart , who had taken over the post of coach from Johan Strömwall in the previous season , was extended. The two young players Andreas Kristler and Michael Raffl left the club for Salzburg and Sweden ( Leksands IF ). Marco Pewal from Villach from Salzburg was signed as a replacement . In addition, Pierre-Luc Sleigher was signed by the Bietigheim Steelers from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . Striker Kyle Wanvig was signed by the Slovak club HK Poprad , while defender Craig Weller joined the Drava from British club Cardiff Devils . With Marco Wieser also a young local goalie was brought back, the previously in the North American two years NAHL had played. With Lynn Loyns , another striker was committed who was active in the previous season at HC Pustertal in the Italian A1 series .
The EC KAC had already extended the contracts with some of the young players during the current season. For example, Stefan and Manuel Geier , Thomas Hundertpfund , Markus Pirmann , Raphael Herburger , Stefan Schumnig and Johannes Kirisits were given long-term contracts. In addition, Thomas Koch from Klagenfurt was brought back. The Canadian Jeff Shantz ended his active career as did defender Sean Brown . Like Tyler Scofield last year , another striker, John Lammers, was brought to Klagenfurt from HC Plzeň .
At the EHC Linz, the squad underwent an extensive redesign after the performance in the previous season, which fell short of expectations. With Brad Purdie , Rob Shearer , Reid Cashman , Rich Bronilla and Jason Ward , a large number of top performers left the club to be replaced by new players. Likewise, coach Kim Collins was sacked after two seasons and replaced by Rob Daum . On the other hand, there were some new signings: Mike Ouellette , the top scorer of the Graz 99ers, was signed again after the preseason, and Rob Hisey was another former player of the 99ers. With Adrian Veideman ( Iserlohn Roosters , DEL) and Justin Kurtz ( REV Bremerhaven , 2nd Bundesliga), two experienced legionaries followed. In addition, the team was strengthened with some young players: Patrick Spannring and Marcel Wolf came from the national division EC Dornbirn , and Michael and Brian Lebler , sons of the former KAC and VSV star Ed Lebler , both with Austrian passports, were brought in from overseas. With Curtis Murphy of the SCL Tigers an experienced player was also committed to the defense.
The Laibach team initially only had departures: goalkeeper Jan Chábera and defender Jeff Tory , both of whom were only signed last season, were sacked. Young player Žiga Pavlin moved to Sweden for the second division IF Troja-Ljungby . Scott Hotham ( Lillehammer IK ) and Jamie Fraser ( Houston Eros ) were two new defenders. Ken Ograjensek was brought from the farm team to the first team, and Jean-Philippe Lamoureux from the Abbotsford Heat a new goalkeeper has been committed. Defender Brad Cole came to the Slovenian capital from the ECHL club Greenville Road Warriors .
In Zagreb, the contracts with most of the service providers from the previous season were extended. Backup goalkeeper Gašper Krošelj moved to HK Jesenice and was replaced by Michael Ouzas of the Las Vegas Wranglers . With Dario Kostović ( HC Lugano ), Tomislav Zanoški ( Wölfe Freiburg ), Gal Koren ( Kelowna Rockets ) and Dino Gombar (U-20s of the EHC Basel ) several foreign players with Croatian roots were signed again. In addition came Geoff Waugh ( Victoria Salmon Kings ) and David Brine ( San Antonio Rampage ) to Zagreb. Further engagements were Andy Delmore ( Lørenskog IK ), Sasha Pokulok ( DEG Metro Stars ) and Adam Naglich ( Bakersfield Condors ).
With the Graz 99ers Bill Gilligan ended his engagement after three years of coaching due to lack of success. After Mike Ouellette (Linz) left, several new players were signed: Dustin Van Ballegooie and the former Jesenice striker Brett Lysak both moved from the Danish club SønderjyskE Ishockey to Mur, Rodi Short was brought on by the national league champions VEU Feldkirch, and Toni Dahlman from the Augsburger Panthers from the DEL. With Artiom Konovalov a young goalkeeper of the EC Red Bull Salzburg has been signed. Sébastien Bisaillon ( Hamilton Bulldogs , AHL), Olivier Latendresse ( SC Bietigheim-Bissingen , 2nd Bundesliga) and Guillaume Lefebvre ( Bakersfield Condors , ECHL) added to the ranks of transfer card players . The Czech Zdeněk Blatný (previously HC Dukla Trenčín ) came to Graz for a tryout and was later firmly committed.
With goalkeeper Zoltán Hetényi , Dávid Jobb , Dániel Fekete , Roger Holéczy , Artyom Vaszjunyin , a number of top performers left the club. New additions were Derek Ryan ( University of Alberta ), Ladislav Sikorcin ( HSC Csíkszereda ), Bálint Magosi ( Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák ) and Balázs Láda ( Miskolci Jegesmedvék JSE ). Striker Árpád Mihály was in negotiations with several KHL clubs , but ultimately stayed with the club. Adam Munro ( SG Cortina ) and Christian Borgatello ( HC Bozen ) were brought to Hungary from the Italian league . With Harlan Pratt , an EBEL-experienced defender came to the Hungarians who had previously played for the Vienna Capitals and Ljubljana.
At HK Jesenice it initially seemed as if the club would manage to keep the top line made up of the three youngsters Rok Tičar , Robert Sabolič and Žiga Jeglič . However, as the spring progressed, it gradually became known that all three were turning their backs on the club. Tičar switched to DEL Club Krefeld Pinguine , and Jeglič and Sabolič signed a contract with Södertälje SK in the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan . Goalkeeper Michal Fikrt could be kept. To compensate for the departures, several legionnaires were invited to a tryout: the twin brothers Justin and Tyler Donati (both Elmira Jackals ) and Dylan Hunter of the Milwaukee Admirals , Shay Stephenson ( Vålerenga Oslo ) and Logan Stephenson ( Adirondack Phantoms ) left the club even before the start of the season, as it was not possible to agree on the content of the contract. Only James Sixsmith ( Kölner Haie ), Thomas Ward-Cardinal ( St. Albert Steel ), Wacey Rabbit (KHL Medveščak Zagreb) and Antti Pusa ( Villard-de-Lans ) could be held. With Andrej Tavželj a regular player of the Slovenian national team returned to Slovenia after two years in the Italian Serie A1, who had previously played for the local rivals from Ljubljana for several years. In addition, Jaka Ankerst, a young Slovenian striker who had played for the Diables Rouges de Briançon in the preseason, came to Jesenice .
HK Orli Znojmo signed some Czech players with Petr Kanko ( HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi ), Lubomir Vosatko ( HC Vítkovice Steel ) and Jan Seda ( HC Pardubice ). Goalkeeper Jakub Čech moved from HC Tábor to the new league, but left the club a little later. With Lukáš Sáblík ( HC Energie Karlovy Vary ) an adequate replacement could be found. The Slovak Peter Pucher came from HKM Zvolen to the new league.

Season preparation

As in previous seasons, the EBEL clubs again competed in several tournaments in 2011 to prepare for the new season. The most important of these tournaments was the second edition of the European Trophy , in which the Vienna Capitals took part in addition to the EC Red Bull Salzburg.

Basic round

Preliminary round

First first half of the season

The basic round of the 2011/12 season began on September 9, 2011 with the new edition of last year's final, EC KAC against EC Red Bull Salzburg, which the Klagenfurt team won 6-2.

Even in this early phase of the season, some unexpected developments became apparent. The Laibacher showed good performances , supported by the outstanding Jean-Philippe Lamoureux in goal, and were able to quickly establish themselves in the top regions of the table. It was similar for SAPA Fehérvár AV19, which was very compact compared to the previous seasons and was also able to win close games. The EHC Linz was particularly convincing in the offensive, which was able to compensate for the initially weak performance of Alex Westlund in goal over long stretches .

Salzburg established themselves in the midfield and could not yet build on the performance of last year's playoffs. In this table region, the Graz 99ers, who missed consistency above all, fought a battle with the Capitals and newcomer Orli Znojmo to remain in the top six. The Czechs had big problems at the beginning, especially on the defensive and conceded an average of more than four goals per game, which ultimately led to the dismissal of coach Karel Soudek . However, under the leadership of Martin Stloukal , the performance of the young team stabilized quickly.

Two teams that were traded better in advance disappointed in the first phase of the season. The Vienna Capitals could only rarely use their offensive potential, which was partly due to the new and much more defensive-oriented system of the Swedish head coach Tommy Samuelsson . At the same time, the Viennese regularly received many avoidable goals, which also brought the new goalkeeper Reinhard Divis some criticism. The Capitals responded by sacking Pat Kavanagh and instead signed striker Nathan Robinson .

The EC VSV fared even worse, slipping down to the bottom of the table by the end of the first first half of the season. The Villacher struggled with a miserable evaluation of chances and regularly lost games in the final phase. Especially the new striker legionnaires Pierre-Luc Sleigher , Kyle Wanvig and Lynn Loyns were criticized. The latter was sacked after nine games. Head coach Mike Stewart also had to accept some criticism, as his team lacked any creativity, especially in the forward game.

Even in this first phase of the league there was an above-average number of suspensions; so were John Kirisits from KAC, Erik Reitz from Salzburg, Kyle Wanvig from VSV, Rodi Short of the 99ers and Justin Kurtz blocked by each of Linz, due to various offenses for multiple Games.

The game of Zagreb against the KAC on October 9th also made waves. Shortly before the game, the second goalkeeper Michael Ouzas was injured, which put the Croatians in a precarious situation as the nominal number one, Robert Kristan , had also been out since the start of the season. Zagreb responded by loaning Croatian youth player Mate Krešimir Tomljenović , who played for HKm Zvolen in the Slovak U20 league , and flown in on a charter flight. The Croatians reported the transfer to the IIHF and the Croatian Association, but only faxed an unsigned transfer card to the ÖEHV, which meant that the player was not entitled to play. After several days, it was finally decided on October 13th to score the game, which the Croatians had won 5-4, with 0-5 in favor of the EC KAC.

First second half

The second half of the first round was interrupted by the first national team break and brought a change at the top of the table. The EHC Linz overtook the EC KAC thanks to sovereign performances and in the meantime had an advantage of eight points over the first pursuer. The EC KAC went through a period of weakness and slipped back to third place for a short time. KHL Medveščak Zagreb turned out to be the team of the hour; the Croatians had seven wins in a row up to half-time and improved significantly in the table. Part of the reason for this was the return of Robert Kristan , who showed outstanding performances with two shutouts and an average goal against goal of 1.33 and took over the top of the goalkeeper standings.

In midfield, Alba Volán was able to confirm the good performances from the start of the season, while the Vienna Capitals continued to struggle with weaknesses, especially in the special teams. New signing Znojmo continued to fail because of the consistency and in particular lost important games against the table neighbors. The Graz 99ers had a similar experience and even slipped back to the penultimate place. In contrast, the performances at VSV stabilized, which even did not concede in the last two players before half-time.

One game, the encounter between Orli Znojmo and KAC, had to be interrupted after the first period due to massive ice problems and should be played again at the end of December.

HK Jesenice took over the last place in the table from EC VSV and, as in the preseason, had to fight again with financial problems. Since the club was unable to make payments to its transfer card players on time, another wave of emigration followed. Johan Björk , Marcus Olsson , James Sixsmith and Martin Tuma turned their backs on the club and mostly hired teams from the Norwegian GET leagues , leaving the Krainers with only a rump team. The club is striving to remain in the Erste Bank Liga, but concerns have been raised in this regard.

Various player changes also took place at other clubs. After Jordan Morrison , the EC KAC signed another striker, Joey Tenute, in response to the long-term injuries of its key players. The EC VSV signed two new players, Mike Craig and Shayne Toporowski , and Pat Kavanagh returned to the lineup at Vienna Capitals after being kicked out. Part of the responsibility for this was the surprising end of Harald Ofner's career , who joined the police force in December 2011. At Alba Volán, defender Christian Borgatello returned to Italy for family reasons and was replaced by Justin DaCosta . EC Red Bull Salzburg lost one of their transfer card players in Daniel Erlich . The Graz 99ers signed Frédéric Cloutier to relieve regular goalkeeper Fabian Weinhandl .

Second first round

The third quarter of the basic round brought only a few changes in the table. The EHC Linz continued to play at a high level and thus fixed participation in the playoff well before the end of the preliminary round. As the first pursuer, the KAC was replaced by the Salzburgers, who also won the Red Bull Salute during the Christmas break , while the EC KAC was able to overcome a crisis, but slipped back to fourth place. The bears from Zagreb, however, acted at a very high level and were able to move up to third place. With the Croatians, goalkeeper Robert Kristan played in top form and even after sixteen appearances remained with a goal against goal of 1.8, which he also led the goalkeeper statistics.

Alba Volán and HDD Ljubljana also managed to stay in the top six. The Hungarians in particular gave the lie to the doubts expressed before the season and continued to win important games against their direct neighbors. The EC VSV, however, achieved seventh place just ahead of the Vienna Capitals, who continued to attract attention mainly due to inconsistent performance. The Graz 99ers and newcomer Znojmo had a similar experience, both of whom were clearly behind the top teams in terms of quality.

HK Jesenice remained at the bottom of the table. Despite the adverse circumstances, the crisis-ridden team was able to surprise several times and win against significantly better-placed clubs, which meant that they remained within striking distance of the teams placed in front of them.

Some transfers were also made during this phase of the season, with the departure of Pascal Morency in particular causing a stir among the bears. The striker was injured at his home in an unexplained manner and was replaced by Matt Siddall .

Second round

The final phase did not bring any major changes in the standings, so that the participants in the upper and lower intermediate round were already determined ahead of time. Still, there were some unexpected developments. The EC VSV was able to secure seventh place and thus the maximum number of bonus points for the qualifying round by winning the last five games and beating the four top teams. The Vienna Capitals fired defender Ross Lupaschuk and (for the second time) striker Pat Kavanagh and brought André Lakos back to Austria, who had previously been removed from the squad with the Kölner Haien . The Capitals also set an EBEL-internal record: in the game in Klagenfurt on the Viennese were already 0: 5 after 44:47 minutes, but were able to score four goals within three minutes and 46 seconds; but it was no longer enough to win.

However, the situation at HK Jesenice became dramatic. After the team had struggled with enormous financial problems throughout the season, the league management was forced to give the club an ultimatum. The Krainer had to prove before the start of the qualifying round that they had the means to be able to play the season to the end, otherwise they should be excluded from the competition. On the evening of January 23, 2012, the league management announced that the club could provide evidence and that Jesenice could end the season on a sporting basis.

Placement round

The placement round was unspectacular for long stretches, the placements changed only minimally. Here Székesfehérvár made the biggest leap forward, while Ljubljana and the EC KAC lost ground. For the latter team, however, the unsuccessful second round meant a last minute coach change: before the last game of the regular season, Manny Viveiros was dismissed and replaced by the Swiss Christian Weber , who had previously coached the club's farm team. This sudden decision, combined with the unprofessional nature of the communication regarding the subscription prices for the playoff, which were also announced very late, caused quite a stir among fans.

EC Red Bull Salzburg made just before transfer circuit with a message sit up, which was also discussed media extensively: as Josh Tordjman in goal was not the hoped-for support was Marty Turco to end of season, committed after he previously with the club the European Trophy had be able to win.

The last game of the cops turned out to be a curiosity. Since Ljubljana wanted to avoid potential quarter-final opponents EC KAC, the penalty shoot-out turned into a farce, as the Slovenian goalie left the gate and the Bulls' shooters only had to hit the empty goal. The behavior of the Slovenian team was subsequently sanctioned by the criminal panel with a fine of € 10,000 and ten or four games ban for goalkeeper Matija Pintarič and coach Hannu Järvenpää .

Qualifying round

The qualifying round remained closely contested until the last day of the match, when four of the five clubs potentially had a chance of a playoff entry. While Jesenice was able to win several games against all expectations, the EC VSV in particular struggled for a long time against a bad shape. Newcomer Znojmo easily qualified for the quarter-finals without a bonus point, while the Vienna Capitals only managed to do this with the help of the VSV and an 11: 3 win over Jesenice. The Graz 99ers gave up their playoff chance in the last game against the VSV after they were the only team to have lost both games against Jesenice.

Quarter finals

  • EHC Linz (1) - Vienna Capitals (8): 4: 3
The series between the EHC Linz and the Capitals was characterized by strong form fluctuations, although the Viennese showed the better performance over long periods. While Linz acted very weakly, especially defensively, on the Viennese side the performance of the top players improved after a mixed round. François Fortier in particular succeeded in building on at least a rudimentary basis of his outstanding previous season. Sebastian Stefaniszin replaced the injured Reinhard Divis in goal and played largely solidly. This meant that the Capitals were able to equalize after a 1: 3 deficit in the series. In the crucial game seven on Linz ice, however, serious defensive mistakes led to a rapid deficit, so that in the end the young goalkeeper Thomas Dechel also made his first Bundesliga appearance. Linz pulled away to 8: 1 after forty minutes, so that in the end the Capitals only had cosmetic results.
  • KHL Medveščak Zagreb (2) - Orli Znojmo (7): 4: 0
The series between the Croatian club from Zagreb and new league Znojmo was the clearest. The former succeeded with 4-0 wins in the sweep, with the exception of the decisive game number four, all games were rather one-sided in favor of the favorite. Only in the last encounter the Czechs could seriously challenge Zagreb. Against the background of a team consisting mostly of young players (goalkeeper Marek Ciliak was only twenty-one years old), the Czechs showed an overall good performance as a basis for the coming seasons. The season's goal of not finishing last in the premiere year was thus achieved.
  • Alba Volán Székesfehérvár (3) - HDD Olimpija Ljubljana (6): 2: 4
The second non-Austrian series started with a clear overweight in favor of Fehérvár, who was able to win his first two home games and was only defeated away in extra time. At Ljubljana goalkeeper Jean-Philippe Lamoureux was weak and was also often provoked by opposing players, which among other things led to a game penalty. The Laibach team managed a successful return to the series and with a 2-1 win in the fifth game also the necessary away win. Lamoureux was also injured in this game, so that the young Matic Boh had to take over in the last game . Thanks to a solid team performance, Ljubljana also managed the fourth victory and thus the promotion to the semi-finals. Székesfehérvár was defeated as the favorite in the series after the team had shown consistently good performances throughout the season.
  • EC Red Bull Salzburg (4) - EC KAC (5): 2: 4
In the new edition of last year's final, EC Red Bull Salzburg started the series as favorites and dominated the action on the ice in the first three matches. After a clear win at the start, the second game was only just lost when Salzburg couldn't use a power play in overtime and only a little later received a goal. With game four, however, the tide turned; the EC KAC equalized to 2: 2 and thanks to outstanding defensive work in the fifth game secured the necessary away win and thus the lead in the series. This compact achievement also succeeded in the sixth game; With a safe victory, the Klagenfurters secured the semi-finals and ensured that Salzburg did not make it to the final for the first time in six years. The sport was overshadowed by some grossly unsporting fouls, which caused many injuries, especially on the Klagenfurt side (the last two games were played with only two regular defenders) and were punished with a large number of bans.

Semifinals

  • EHC Linz (1) - HDD Olimpija Ljubljana (6): 4: 1
The EHC Linz started as the clear favorite in the series and lived up to this expectation over long stretches. The Laibacher, who still lacked a large number of key players including goalkeeper Lamoureux, could not oppose the Upper Austrians and only won a single game on their own ice. The only other success was the draw after regular time in the second game, which was then lost in overtime. The third game turned into a debacle and made the class difference between the two teams clear. The Slovenians were clearly inferior in terms of play, but offered their fans a fighting performance that could not prevent the clear result of the series.
  • KHL Medveščak Zagreb (2) - EC KAC (5): 1: 4
The series between Zagreb and the KAC could not be assessed in advance, as Zagreb had prevailed against a relatively weak opponent in the quarter-finals, while the KAC had taken the title favorite from the competition after a botched main round. In the very first game, however, the EC KAC continued its successful run and pulled away to 3-0. With the Croatians, Frank Banham responded with a sensational check, which was shortly followed by a mass brawl. After the game, which the KAC won, bans were issued against Banham and Joel Prpic , as well as against the two coaches. The KAC continued its successful run in the second game and performed well, especially defensively. The Croatians only found a remedy against the Klagenfurters in the third game, but could not preserve their strengths. The series ended in the fifth game on Zagreb's ice with a clear 5-2 victory for the EC KAC.

final

Before the final series, both teams were given similar chances of winning the title; As the most sovereign team, Linz dominated the league for long stretches, while the KAC had taken two better rated teams out of the competition in the first two playoff rounds. The first game largely followed this assessment and brought the KAC the opening win on foreign ice, which succeeded with a last-minute goal after equalizing a 0-2 deficit. Already in the second encounter, however, the Linz team regained their home rights in the series and showed themselves to be a tactically well-adjusted team that, based on a safe defense and an excellent Alex Westlund in goal, allowed only a few chances.

In the third game, the superiority of the Upper Austrians was shown for the first time in the form of a runaway victory. The Linz acted very safely in front of the opposing goal and used their chances efficiently. This continued in the fourth game, where the Linz team secured three match pucks with a safe away win. The EC KAC played a large part in the game, but created too few dangerous situations and was repeatedly confronted with dangerous counterattacks.

The last game in the series was a return to its beginning. Both teams held the 0-0 for a long time before Linz took the lead with a double strike. After the subsequent hit, the EC KAC pressed the equalizer in the last third, but couldn't manage it in the last third despite a shot ratio of 11: 4. The EHC Linz thus won the second title in the club's history after the 2002/03 season .

spectator

As in previous years, the league was able to post a new attendance record this season. A total of 1,148,595 spectators flocked to the 308 games, which gives an average of 3,729. Compared to the previous year (1,098,846 spectators in also 308 games, average: 3,568), an increase of almost 50,000 spectators was achieved.

The main responsibility was once again the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb, which attracted fifteen thousand spectators seven times for the open-air games alone. The Vienna Capitals, which benefited from the renewed and enlarged hall, also recorded a strong increase.

Thanks to these results, the league again took seventh place in the Europe-wide ranking.
