Kyle Wanvig (born January 29, 1981 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who has played in the National Hockey League for the Minnesota Wild and Tampa Bay Lightning, among others .
Career
Kyle Wanvig began his career as a hockey player in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1997 to 2001 for Edmonton Ice , Kootenay Ice and the Red Deer Rebels . His most successful season he had in the 2000/01 season, his last junior year, when he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the WHL championship, and then the Memorial Cup , the championship of the Canadian Hockey League with the Red Deer Rebels . He also received the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the Memorial Cup tournament. In his WHL time, the winger was first selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1999 in the third round as a total of 89 players by the Boston Bruins . Since this then did not take him under contract, he could be drafted in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the second round as a total of 36th player by the Minnesota Wild .
In the Minnesota Wild franchise Wanvig was under contract for a total of five years from 2001 to 2006, during which he was only on the ice for their farm team Houston Eros in the American Hockey League in the 2001/02 season and during the lockout in the 2004/05 season was standing. From 2006 to 2008 the right-shooter was almost exclusively used in the AHL, in which he ran up for the Chicago Wolves , Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals . He was also used in eleven games by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League . For the 2008/09 season , the Canadian went to Europe for the first time, where he was active for Amur Khabarovsk in the newly established Continental Hockey League and Brynäs IF in the Swedish Elitserien .
After he returned to North America for the 2009/10 season , where he was signed by the Portland Pirates from the AHL, he was signed by the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League for the following season . In January 2011 Wanvig was hired by HK Poprad from the Extraliga . In the following season he completed only 16 games for the EC VSV due to injuries before he ended his career in December 2011 and became a professional firefighter in Canada.
