The Edmonton Ice were a Canadian ice hockey franchise based in Edmonton in the province of Alberta . The team played from 1996 to 1998 in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).
history
The Edmonton Ice was founded in 1996 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . In their only two seasons in the WHL they succeeded neither in the 1996/97 season as fifth in the Central Division, nor in the 1997/98 season as fourth in the Central Division to reach the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup . Due to the continued failure, those responsible replaced their coach Dave Siciliano by Ryan McGill at the beginning of the 1997/98 season . Since the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League did not want to have direct competition from the WHL in their city, they did not let Edmonton Ice play its games in Rexall Place , so that the team had to switch to a small suburban hall. Because of financial problems the franchise in 1998 after been Cranbrook , British Columbia , relocated where it until 2019 under the name Kootenay Ice took part in the game operation of the WHL and the season 2019/20 to Winnipeg , Manitoba , moved and there since then as Winnipeg Ice in appearance occurs.
