The Estevan Bruins were a Canadian ice hockey team from Estevan , Saskatchewan . The team played from 1966 to 1971 in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).

history

The Estevan Bruins were founded in 1966 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . After they had already reached the playoff semi-finals in their first year, the Bruins won the President's Cup for the first and only time in the 1967/68 season . In the final they prevailed in the best-of-seven series with four wins in a draw against the Flin Flon Bombers . As WHL champion, Estevan was eligible to participate in the final tournament for the Memorial Cup , in the final of which the Niagara Falls Flyers from the Ontario Hockey Association were defeated 1: 4 wins. After another semi-final and reaching the playoff quarter-finals twice, the franchise was moved to New Westminster , British Columbia in 1971 , where it then took part in the WHL's game operations under the name New Westminster Bruins .

The void left by the resettlement of the Bruins in Estevan was filled by a team that also called themselves Estevan Bruins and which has played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League since 1972 .
