The Flin Flon Bombers are a Canadian ice hockey team based in Flin Flon , Manitoba that plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . The team played from 1967 to 1978 in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).

history

The Flin Flon Bombers, which were founded in 1927, played in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League from 1951 to 1966 , winning the championship six times during this period (1952, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1957, 1960). In addition, the team prevailed in 1957 in the final tournament for the Memorial Cup against the Ottawa Junior Canadiens . For the 1966/67 season, the Bombers moved to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League , whose championship they also won that year. Then Flin Flon was added as an expansion franchise to the Canadian top junior league, Western Hockey League , which had been founded a year earlier . In their first season in the WHL they reached the final of the Ed Chynoweth Cup , in which they were defeated in the best-of-seven series by the Estevan Bruins with four defeats in a draw. In the following three years, the team from Manitoba stood three times in a row against the Edmonton Oil Kings in the finals, which they beat in 1969 and 1970 and which they were defeated in the 1970/71 season with four defeats in one draw and one win.

In the summer of 1978 the rights to the WHL franchise were sold to the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Flin Flon Bombers moved to the Northern Manitoba Junior Hockey League , in which they played until 1984. The franchise was then briefly relocated to neighboring Creighton , Saskatchewan , and renamed Creighton Bombers in order to be able to participate in the game operations of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . After the SJHL allowed the bombers to operate a franchise outside of Saskatchewan, the team moved back to Flin Flon in 1986, where it has since played under the original name of Flin Flon Bombers.
