Flin Flon (officially: City of Flin Flon ) is a mining town on the border of the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan .
Most of the metropolitan area is in Manitoba. The name of the city goes back to the fictional character Josiah Flintabbety Flonatin from the booklet The Sunless City by JE Preston Muddock .
history
In 1927 Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBM & S) established a mining settlement here to develop the area 's large copper and zinc deposits . A year later the place received a rail connection . In the 1930s, the city grew rapidly, as the world economic crisis affected farmers to make a living as miners searched, and 1933, the settlement gained the municipality status . In 1970 Flin Flon was finally granted town charter .
economy
By far the greatest number of employees still work in mining at HBM & S. In addition to other jobs in retail and hospitality , the city also offers work for some long-distance drivers . Prairie Plant Systems has been growing cannabis for medicinal purposes in Flin Flon since 2002 .
sons and daughters of the town
Film director Roger Avary and ice hockey players Ken Baumgartner , Bobby Clarke , Ralph Backstrom , Ernie Wakely and Dean Evason were born in the town.
