Yorkton ( City of Yorkton ) is a city in the southeast of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan near the border with Manitoba .
The population was around 15,669 in 2011. The population of the metropolitan area was 18,282.
history
The first pioneers from York County , Ontario settled in 1882 . They had been recruited by the York Farmers Colonization Company and first founded the York Colony settlement three kilometers north of today's city on the bank of a small river . The area was still part of Assiniboia at the time and was part of the Northwest Territories , which were co-administered from Upper Fort Garry , today's Winnipeg .
During the Second World War , an airport for the No. 11 Service Flying Training School built by the RCAF , now Yorkton Municipal Airport .

Yorkton is located approximately 170 km northeast of Regina and approximately 300 km southeast of Saskatoon and is thus situated between these cities and Winnipeg .
