Weyburn is a city in the Canadian Prairie Province of Saskatchewan . In 2016 it is the ninth largest city in this province with 10,870 inhabitants.
geography
Weyburn is located on the Souris River , about 100 kilometers southeast of Regina . The border with the US state of North Dakota in the south is 75 kilometers away. Saskatchewan Highways 13 , 35 and 39 run through Weyburn. Wayburn Airport is to the northwest .
history
The area was first settled in 1892 after railway lines were installed there. Some chroniclers believe that the settlement got its name from a Scottish settler who crossed the Souris River and used the Scottish words wee for 'small' and burn for 'brook' to describe the place. This word creation was later changed to Weyburn . Other historians believe that the place name was chosen in honor of a supervisor involved in the construction of a railway line . The city soon developed into a major railway junction.
Today Weyburn is Canada's largest inland grain transhipment point. In addition, crude oil is produced from over 600 wells in the area . The city is home to the Weyburn Red Wings ice hockey team, as well as the Turner Curling Museum and Soo Line Historical Museum .
