Derrick Pouliot (born January 16, 1994 in Weyburn , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League since July 2019 and for their farm team, the San Antonio Rampage , in the American Hockey League is used. Previously, he spent three years in the organization of the Pittsburgh Penguins , who selected the defender in eighth position in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , and two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks .
Career
youth
Pouliot started his career in his hometown with the Weyburn Wings before joining the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League in 2009. In the same year, the defender was selected as the overall first in the WHL Bantam Draft , the Entry Draft of the Western Hockey League , by the Portland Winterhawks . After another season in Moose Jaw, in which he was second best scorer among defenders in the league behind Morgan Rielly , Pouliot made his debut in the WHL at the end of the 2009/10 season .
For the 2010/11 season he moved permanently to the Portland Winterhawks and scored 30 points in 65 games as a rookie . In the play-offs he and the team made it to the final of the Ed Chynoweth Cup , where they were subject to the Kootenay Ice . In the following season , Pouliot was able to almost double his points and was with 48 assists the second best assists among the defenders of the WHL. In the play-offs, he and Joe Morrow as the defender with the highest points played a major role in ensuring that the Winterhawks reached the final again. There, however, they were defeated by the Edmonton Oil Kings in seven games.
In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , Pouliot was selected in the first round in eighth position by the Pittsburgh Penguins . In September 2012, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Penguins, which begins as soon as he switches to the professional sector.
He then returned to Portland and topped the mark of one point per game for the first time in the 2012/13 season , but was only able to play 44 missions in the regular season due to an ankle injury. After his return, Pouliot helped the Winterhawks for the third time in a row to reach the final of the WHL play-offs, from which the team emerged this time as the winner against the Edmonton Oil Kings. At the 2013 Memorial Cup, Portland lost only to the Halifax Mooseheads . Pouliot finished the tournament with seven points from five games and was elected to the All-Star Team .
After he had also spent the 2013/14 season with the Winterhawks and reached the playoff final with the team , he switched permanently to the organization of the Pittsburgh Penguins at the beginning of the 2014/15 season.
NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins initially gave him to their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , but appointed him to the NHL squad for the first time in December 2014, making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL). As a result, Pouliot switched regularly between the NHL and AHL, winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017 , but not able to book enough stakes in each case to be immortalized on the tropics. After almost five years in the organization of the Penguins, the defender was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in October 2017 , who in return gave Andrei Pedan and a four-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In Vancouver, Pouliot was active for two seasons before joining the St. Louis Blues as a free agent in July 2019 .
International
Derrick Pouliot represented Canada West , made up of players from the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan , at the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . There he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament together with his future teammate Seth Jones . In the same year he won the gold medal with the Canadian team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 .
After missing the leap into the final squad in 2013, Pouliot represented Canada's U20 team for the first time at the 2014 U20 World Youth Championship , where he formed a defensive line with Aaron Ekblad . With four assists he was the most successful assists among the defenders of the tournament.
