Morgan Rielly (born March 9, 1994 in West Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since August 2012 . With the Canadian national team , the defender won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .

Career

Rielly played for the Notre Dame Hounds in the Canadian Junior League Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League (SMHL) when he was selected in the 2009 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in second overall position by the Moose Jaw Warriors . After another season in the SMHL, he moved to the Warriors' squad at the beginning of the 2010/11 WHL season . In his rookie season in the WHL he was used in 65 games, with 29 points scorer . In the following season he pulled after 18 games, in which he could show a point average of 1 per game, a cruciate ligament rupture and was out for the rest of the regular season . After a break of several months, Morgan Rielly returned to his team at the beginning of the Eastern Conference final and played all five games Moose Jaws against the Edmonton Oil Kings , against which they were defeated in the fifth game of the best-of-seven series.

In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in fifth position by the Toronto Maple Leafs . He stayed in the Warriors 'squad for the time being, before being on the Maple Leafs' NHL squad since the beginning of the 2013/14 season. In the 2017/18 season, he recorded his best personal statistic to date when he scored 52 points scorer in 76 games. He increased this by a further 20 points the following year, placing him in third place among the defenders of the league behind Brent Burns (83) and Mark Giordano (74).

International

Morgan Rielly was a member of the Canada Pacific team , which won the bronze medal in the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . The defender represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time at the 2011 U18 World Cup . At this tournament he finished fourth with his team after the Canadians lost the semifinals against the American selection and were subject to the Russian team in the subsequent game for third place . He had another assignment at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , where he won the gold medal with the Canadians.

At the U20 World Cup in 2013 , he represented the U20 national team of his home country and achieved fourth place with the team. The following year he made his senior debut when he finished fifth with Team Canada at the 2014 World Cup . Two years later, Rielly was back in the Canadian squad and won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .
