Jacob "Jake" Muzzin (born February 21, 1989 in Woodstock , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League since January 2019 . Previously, the defender spent nine years in the organization of the Los Angeles Kings , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2014 . He also won the gold medal at the 2015 World Cup with the Canadian national team .
Career
The defender was initially active for the Brantford 99ers in a lower-class Canadian junior league before the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL Priority Selection 2005 in the first round in eleventh position. For the greyhounds, however, the left shooter made his debut during the 2006/07 season in the Ontario Hockey League after he had been unable to play due to a back injury during the previous season. The Canadian quickly sat down as a regular in the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, with his greatest team success reaching the Western Conference final in the 2007/08 season .
During this time, the Pittsburgh Penguins secured his NHL rights when they selected Muzzin in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round in a total of 141st position. Then this ordered the defender back to the Ontario Hockey League and ran again for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on the ice, which the left-shooter led at times in the role of team captain. After an unsatisfactory 2008/09 season including failed playoff qualification, he completed his most successful year as a junior player in the following season . With 67 points in 64 games of the regular season, including 52 assists, Muzzin was the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and took third place among defenders in the league. Since the Pittsburgh Penguins had not signed him in the meantime, he was available as a free agent and had the right to negotiate with other NHL teams without restriction.
After he had basically agreed on a contractual relationship with the Los Angeles Kings in December 2009 , the Canadian signed an entry level contract on January 4, 2010 with a term of three years. Muzzin had previously taken part in the Nashville Predators training camp in September 2009 without recommending himself for a commitment.
The Los Angeles Kings used him during the 2010/11 season mainly with their farm team , the Manchester Monarchs , in the American Hockey League . During the season he also made his debut in the National Hockey League , where he was used eleven times.
After two more seasons in the Monarchs jersey, Muzzin made it into the Los Angeles Kings NHL squad in January 2013. There he scored his first goal in the league in his third game of the season against the Phoenix Coyotes . After he had a total of eleven scorer points and a plus / minus rating of +10 in March , he was named the first defender since Tyler Myers 2010 NHL rookie of the month .
At the 2015 World Cup , he won the gold medal with the Canadian national team, as well as the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
After nine years in the organization of the Kings, Muzzin was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in January 2019 . In return, the young players Carl Grundström and Sean Durzi and a first-round right to vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft moved to Los Angeles. The Canadian signed a new four-year contract in Toronto in February 2020, which should bring him an average annual salary of around 5.6 million US dollars from the start of the 2020/21 season.
