Ilja Andrejewitsch Michejew ( Russian Илья Андреевич Михеев ; English transcription: Ilya Andreyevich Mikheyev ; born October 10, 1994 in Omsk ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League since May 2019 and for them the position of the winger plays.

Career

Ilya Michejew was born in Omsk and began his career with the local junior team of the HK Avangard Omsk , Omskije Jastreby - the "Omsker hawks". With these he took part in the game operations of the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga (MHL), the highest-ranking junior league in Russia. In his first year, the attacker won the MHL playoffs for the Kharlamov Cup with the team . In the following season he made his professional debut with Jermak Angarsk , one of the cooperation partners of Awangard Omsk, from the second-rate Wysschaja Hockey League . After all, he was also used for the first time in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) for HK Awangard Omsk in the playoffs of the 2014/15 season . However, the winger spent most of this season in the Vysschaya Hockey League at HK Sokol Krasnoyarsk .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, Michejew established himself in the KHL squad in Omsk and increased his personal performance there from year to year. In the 2017/18 season he was already the best scorer of his team with 19 goals and assists, before he recorded his best KHL statistics with 45 scorer points the following year and therefore took part in the KHL All-Star Game . At the same time, the Russian became interesting for teams from North America, so that he signed an entry contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in May 2019 , without having previously been selected in an NHL Entry Draft . There he earned a place in the squad as part of the preparation for the 2019/20 season and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) at the beginning of October 2019 .

International

After Michejew had not represented his home country in the youth field, he played his first major tournament for the Russian national team as part of the 2018 World Cup . There he took sixth place with the Sbornaja .
