Cody Ceci (born December 21, 1993 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League since July 2019 . The defense attorney previously served for the Ottawa Senators for six years . With the Canadian national team , Ceci won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .

Career

youth

Cody Ceci was born to sporty parents. From his mother, a figure skater , he learned to skate at the age of three. His father Perri Ceci was a professional Canadian football player who won the Vanier Cup with the Guelph Gryphons of the University of Guelph in 1984 and also played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League before a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament ended his career prematurely . Both Cody's younger brother and older sister play or played ice hockey as well.

Cody Ceci left Ottawa at the age of 13 years to henceforth in Lakefield ( Ontario ), the Lakefield College School as a boarding school to visit. He subsequently played in the youth departments of the Peterborough Petes and for the Peterborough Liftlock Stars . Through his achievements there he was considered one of the most promising talents in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), one of the three top junior leagues in Canada . Since he also had offers for scholarships from universities of the NCAA (including Harvard ), his parents stipulated that the decision would be his if he were selected in the first round of the draft , otherwise they would decide. As a result, he was selected by the Ottawa 67’s in the first round in 16th place and thus played both in the OHL and in his hometown.

After his first season in the OHL, he represented the Canada Ontario team at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 , where he won the silver medal with the team. In the following season he increased his scorer points from 12 to 34, so that he was invited to the U18 national team of Canada and took part in the 2011 Junior World Cup with them . In the 2011/12 season, Ceci made his breakthrough by bringing his point yield to 60 points, almost doubling it. As a result, he jumped in the ranking of North American outfield players for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2012 from 16th to sixth place; he was also elected to the Second All-Star Team of the OHL. In the actual draft, the Ottawa Senators then selected him in 15th position, with Ceci already being a fan of the franchise from his hometown as a child . In August of the same year, Ceci signed an entry-level contract with the Senators, but initially remained in the Ottawa 67's squad. In his senior year with the 67's, he led the team as captain before moving  to the Owen Sound Attack , who also play in the OHL, in January 2013 through a multi-player swap deal - including Joseph Blandisi and Jacob Middleton .

Ottawa and Toronto

At the end of the 2012/13 season, the defender was then appointed for the first time in the squad of the Binghamton Senators , who act as the farm team of the Ottawa Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, he was appointed to the OHL Second All-Star Team for the second time in a row . He also spent the beginning of the 2013/14 season in the AHL, but was appointed to the NHL squad in December 2013 to represent the suspended Jared Cowen . Just two games after his debut against the Buffalo Sabers , he scored his first goal in the National Hockey League in overtime of the game against the St. Louis Blues . Since then, Ceci has been a permanent member of the Senators' squad and was active for the team in the NHL until summer 2019. In early July 2019, after six years of franchise work with Ben Harpur , Aaron Luchuk and a third-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, he was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs . In return, Nikita Saizew , Connor Brown and Michael Carcone gave them to Ottawa.

After the 2015/16 season, Ceci made her debut for the Canadian senior team at the 2016 World Cup , where she won the gold medal with the team.
