Career
Frédérik Gauthier was born in Laval and grew up in the neighboring Saint-Lin-Laurentides , where he was active in his youth for the Association du Hockey Mineur des Gaulois de St-Lin des Laurentides in the regional junior league. He then attended the Esther-Blondin College and played for their ice hockey team, the Phénix . At the same time, the attacker took part in the 2011 Canada Games , where he won the silver medal by choosing his home province of Québec. Gauthier gained his first international experience at the turn of the year 2011/12 when he represented Team Canada Québec at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2012 . At the end of this season, the center was selected in the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) in 40th position by the Océanic de Rimouski , for whom he played in the top junior league of Québec at the beginning of the 2012/13 season. In his first season, Gauthier scored 60 points in 62 games, was invited to the CHL Top Prospects Game and at the end of the season was elected to the LHJMQ All-Rookie Team. After being with the U18 National Team Canada at the U18 World Cup in 2013 had won the gold medal, which elected him Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft at 21 position.
Although the Maple Leafs had provided Gauthier with an entry-level contract in November 2013 , the attacker remained in the LHJMQ for two more years, especially during the 2014/15 season. Over the turn of the year, the Canadian won the gold medal with the U20 selection at the U20 World Cup in 2015 , before winning the playoffs for the Coupe du Président with the Océanic de Rimouski . He was also awarded the Guy Carbonneau trophy as the best defensive striker in the league.
For the 2015/16 season, Gauthier switched to the organization of the Maple Leafs and was initially employed by their farm team , the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League (AHL), until he joined the Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL ) debuted. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Gauthier regularly commuted between the NHL and AHL and won the Calder Cup with the Marlies at the end of the 2017/18 season . For the 2018/19 season he finally established himself in the Maple Leafs line-up.
