During the 2012/13 season, the winger made his debut for the men's selection in the Elitserien and subsequently established himself in the professional squad of Frölundas. In addition, it chose Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft from at 202. position. In 2014 he was named Rookie of the Year after 24 scorer points in 44 games in the now renamed Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL) , before he was also considered 98th in the KHL Junior Draft 2015 by HK Dinamo Minsk .

In 2016 Johnsson won the Champions Hockey League with Frölunda and shortly afterwards also celebrated the Swedish championship . After signing an entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs in June 2015 , he moved to North America at the end of the 2015/16 season, where he played for the Toronto Marlies , the Maple Leafs' farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL) . There the Swede also established himself as a regular scorer, represented the Marlies at the AHL All-Star Classic and was appointed to the AHL Second All-Star Team 2018, while he made his debut for Toronto in the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 2018 . He then won the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Marlies , leading the league in points (24) and was consequently awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the post-season .

In the 2018/19 season, Johnsson was exclusively used for the NHL for the first time and recorded 20 goals and 43 points scorer. He then signed a new four-year contract in Toronto in June 2019 that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 3.4 million.
