Denis Albertowitsch Malgin ( Russian Денис Альбертович Мальгин ; born January 18, 1997 in Olten ) is a Swiss ice hockey player of Russian descent who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League since February 2020 . Previously, the center spent four years organizing the Florida Panthers .
Career
Malgin is the son of the former professional ice hockey player Albert Malgin , who played in Switzerland from 1993 and became a coach after his career.
Denis Malgin learned to play ice hockey in the youth department of EHC Biel . As a teenager he moved to the ZSC Lions , in the 2013/14 season he made his debut in the National League B (NLB) for the Zurich farm team GC Küsnacht Lions , in the following season he gained his first match practice in the National League A (NLA ) at the ZSC Lions.
In the NHL Draft 2015, the Florida Panthers secured the rights to the young Swiss in the fourth round (102nd place). After the 2014/15 season, Malgin was named the best young player of the year in the NLA. In 2016 he won the Swiss Cup with the ZSC Lions .
In July 2016 he signed a three-year contract with the NHL club Florida Panthers , which was also valid for assignments in the farm team, the Springfield Thunderbirds from the American Hockey League (AHL). In mid-October 2016 he made his NHL debut in a duel between the Panthers and the New Jersey Devils , and in early November 2016 Malgin scored his first goal in the NHL against the Boston Bruins .
After four years in the Panthers organization, Malgin was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February 2020 in exchange for Mason Marchment .
International
Malgin played for the Swiss national team in the age groups U16, U17, U18 and U20. He was appointed to the All-Star Team at the 2015 U18 Junior World Championships .
The attacker made his debut for the senior national team at the 2017 World Cup and finished sixth with the Swiss selection.
