Martin Marinčin (born February 18, 1992 in Košice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player on the position of defender . Since June 2015 he has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League and is also part of their farm team , the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League .

Career

Martin Marinčin began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HC Košice , where he passed through numerous age groups until 2009. For the 2009/10 season he switched to the selection of the Slovak U20 national team , which took part in the league operation of the Slovak Extra League, and made his professional debut there. In 35 games he scored six points and recorded 71 penalty minutes.

In the NHL Entry Draft 2010 Marinčin was selected in the second round at a total of 46th position by the Edmonton Oilers . Then Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg , who pulled him to fifth position in the KHL Junior Draft , also secured his transfer rights in the Continental Hockey League .

For the 2010/11 season Marinčin finally moved to North America and joined the Prince George Cougars from the Western Hockey League , who had previously selected him as the first overall in the CHL Import Draft . In his debut season he scored 56 points in 67 games, making him the league's top rookie defender. After the departure of the Cougars from the WHL play-offs , Marinčin signed a three-year entry contract with the Edmonton Oilers and then played his first assignment for the Oilers' farm team, the Oklahoma City Barons , in the American Hockey League .

The following season he was sent back by the Oilers again to the Prince George Cougars, who transferred him to league rivals Regina Pats during the season . With these, however, he did not come back over the first round of the play-offs. For the 2012/13 season he was finally in the squad of the Oklahoma City Barons and finished the season with 30 points as the team's best defender behind Justin Schultz . He also led the team with a plus / minus balance of +20.

On December 5, 2013, Martin Marinčin made his debut in the National Hockey League when the Oilers played against the Colorado Avalanche . He scored his first scorer point on the 15th when he prepared a goal from David Perron .

As part of the NHL Entry Draft 2015 he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs , with the Oilers in return receiving the NHL rights to Brad Ross and a four-round vote for that draft. With the Maple Leafs' farm team, the Toronto Marlies , the Slovak won the Calder Cup at the end of the 2017/18 season .

International

Marinčin represented Slovakia for the first time at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 and was named team captain of the U18 selection the following year. In addition, he was in the Slovak squad for the U20 Junior World Championship in 2010 and at the age of 17 was the youngest player on his team. In 2011 and 2012 he again took part in the U20 Junior World Championship.

The defender played for the senior national team in the 2014 , 2016 and 2019 World Cups .
