Justin Schultz (born July 6, 1990 in Kelowna , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . Since February 2016 he has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the position of defender and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2016 and 2017 playoffs .
Career
Schultz began his career with the Westside Warriors from the Canadian Junior League British Columbia Hockey League , where he spent two full seasons. During this time he was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in a total of 43rd position . In the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons he was named Interior Conference Defender of the Year. From 2009 to 2012 the defensive player attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison and was active for their ice hockey team, the Wisconsin Badgers , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). In the WCHA he developed into one of the best defensive players in the league and was consequently named the best defensive player in the league in 2011 and 2012, as well as being elected to the First All-Star team. In addition, he was a finalist in both years for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which is given annually to the best university and college players.
Since he could not agree on a contract with his draft club Anaheim Ducks within four years, he became an unrestricted free agent in June 2012 ; a player without a contract who can negotiate freely with all teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). On June 30, 2012, he finally signed a two-year entry - level contract with the Edmonton Oilers .
Due to the lockout before the start of the 2012/13 NHL season , Justin Schultz made his first appearances as a professional player for Edmonton's farm team Oklahoma City Barons from the American Hockey League (AHL). Schultz scored 18 goals and 30 assists in 34 AHL games and took part in the AHL All-Star Game in January 2013 . A little later he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers' squad with the end of the NHL lockout. Although the defender only completed half of all AHL games, he was elected to both the AHL First All-Star Team and the AHL All-Rookie Team in April 2013 when the regular season was over . In addition, he was awarded the Eddie Shore Award as the best defensive player in the league . Justin Schultz was the first rookie in 55 years to be honored with this trophy.
On January 20, 2013, he played his first game in the National Hockey League against the Vancouver Canucks . One day later he scored his first NHL goal in a game between the Oilers and the San Jose Sharks .
In February 2016, Schultz was handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and won the Stanley Cup with them at the end of the season . The defender repeated this success with the Penguins the following year.
