The Zeche Roman is a former coal mine in Witten -Heven. Despite the mining history of over 30 years, the mine was only in operation for about 18 years. The mine belonged to the Märkisches Bergamtsiertel and there to the jury area Hardenstein .

Mining history

On June 24, 1835, a length field was awarded in Wannenschen Cleff . In 1847 216 bushels of hard coal were mined . The coal mined served to determine the quality of the deposit . In 1855, an old tunnel of the Neue Steinkuhle colliery was cleared . Following the clearing work, a cross passage was driven in a northerly direction . The tunnel reached by the end of 1855 a length of 50¼ Lachter . During the excavation, the Roman seam was reached and aligned . The seam was 16 inches thick . Nine miners were employed at the mine that year , but no coal was extracted. The mine was demonstrably in operation the following year. The mine was shut down from the 4th quarter. The mine was back in operation in 1863. In the course of 1867 the Roman colliery was closed.
