Nicholas "Nick" Bjugstad (born July 17, 1992 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League since February 2019 . Previously, the center spent almost six years with the Florida Panthers .

Career

Nick Bjugstad began his career with the Blaine High School school team , for which he was on the ice for three seasons. In its last high school season in 2009/10, the center scored 60 points in 25 games and then won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota. In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in 19th position by the Florida Panthers .

Bjugstad then moved to the University of Minnesota and played for the university's ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his second season he managed the breakthrough with 42 points from 40 games and he was appointed to the First All-Star Team of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . In the following season he was again among the top ten goalscorers in the league with 21 goals and was appointed to the WCHA Third All-Star Team.

After the end of the NCAA season, Bjugstad signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers on April 3, 2013, and made his NHL debut for the team just three days later. In the last game of the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning achieved the first goal of his professional career.

After about six years in Florida, Bjugstad and Jared McCann were handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in early February 2019 . In return, the Panthers Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan received a second-round vote and two fourth-round votes for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .

International

Nick Bjugstad represented the USA for the first time at the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship and won the bronze medal with the team. In the following year he was again in the US squad and was the team's top scorer with four goals alongside Charlie Coyle .

For the World Cup in 2013 in Stockholm and Helsinki Bjugstad was first appointed to the Executive of the Men's National Team and won with the US selection the bronze medal.
