Riley Michael Sheahan (born December 7, 1991 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since September 2019 . Previously, the center spent five years organizing the Detroit Red Wings , was active for almost a year and a half for the Pittsburgh Penguins and played briefly for the Florida Panthers .
Career
youth
Riley Sheahan attended Denis Morris High School in his hometown of St. Catharines and played parallel in the youth departments of the St. Catharines Falcons , most recently in the 2008/09 season in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League . In the summer of 2009, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame to begin studying sociology . He also played for the Fighting Irish , the university's ice hockey team, and scored 17 scorer points in 37 games as a freshman . At the end of the 2009/10 season, Central Scouting Services put him at number 22 on the list of the most promising North American outfield players for the upcoming 2010 NHL Entry Draft . In the actual draft, the Detroit Red Wings then selected him in 21st position.
In Sheahan's sophomore year, the Fighting Irish finished the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) season as runners-up and subsequently received an invitation to the regional rounds of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's national championship . There the team prevailed against the universities of Merrimack and New Hampshire and thus took part in the Frozen Four , the final of the best four university teams in the United States. There Notre Dame lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winner, the University of Minnesota Duluth .
After the attacker increased his personal statistics in the 2011/12 season to 25 scorer points from 37 games, he joined the organization of the Red Wings at the end of the season and made his professional debut for their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins from the American Hockey League (AHL).
NHL
After seven appearances in the AHL, Sheahan signed an entry contract with the Detroit Red Wings in April 2012 and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a few days later . The following season he spent exclusively at the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL and won the Calder Cup with the team . After this success, the Red Wings called him in April 2013 in the NHL squad, where again completed a game.
He spent the 2013/14 season in regular alternation between AHL and NHL, with 42 games mainly in the NHL. He also made his debut after the regular season in the play-offs for the Stanley Cup . With the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Sheahan established himself in the NHL roster of the Detroit Red Wings.
In October 2017, the Red Wings gave the attacker and a five-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft to the Pittsburgh Penguins and received Scott Wilson and a third-round vote for the same draft. After almost one and a half years in Pittsburgh, Sheahan was transferred to the Florida Panthers at the beginning of February 2019 along with Derick Brassard as well as a second-round vote and two fourth-round votes for the NHL Entry Draft 2019 . For this, the penguins received Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann . He ended the season in Florida and joined the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent in September 2019 .

Personal
Riley Sheahan is the second cousin of Brock Sheahan , who is also a professional ice hockey player and also attended the University of Notre Dame.
In October 2012, during his time in Grand Rapids, Sheahan was found to be 3.0 per mille after the police saw him driving the wrong way and was subsequently arrested. He wore a Teletubby costume and had the driver's license of his teammate Brendan Smith with him so that he could still be served alcoholic beverages when he was 20.
In addition, the Canadian shows social commitment in the field of animal welfare , for example, he donates 100 US dollars for every scorer point that he scores in the 2014/15 season to an animal welfare organization in Michigan . He also started a program called “Rileys Rescues” ( Rileys Rescue ), in which he found abandoned animals from animal shelters.
