Brendan Smith (born February 8, 1989 in Mimico , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League since February 2017 .
Career
Brendan Smith began his career as a hockey player in the Ontario Junior Hockey League , in which he was active from 2005 to 2007 for the Wexford Raiders and St. Michael's Buzzers. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the first round as a total of 27th player by the Detroit Red Wings . First, however, he attended the University of Wisconsin for three years , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . As a player from the University of Wisconsin, he received several individual awards.
From the 2010/11 season Smith was used by Detroit's farm team Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League . There he was able to convince right away and was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team in his first year in professional ice hockey . During the 2011/12 season , the Canadian made his National Hockey League debut for the Detroit Red Wings , scoring one goal and six assists in 14 NHL games. However, he spent most of the season again at the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. The 2012/13 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , also began with the Griffins in the AHL. After the start of the NHL season, however, he was appointed by the Detroit Red Wings in their NHL squad.
After more than six years in the organization of the Red Wings, Smith was transferred to the New York Rangers in February 2017 . In return, Detroit received a second-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . The defense attorney then signed a new four-year contract in New York in June 2017 that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.35 million.
