Jacob Ryan Trouba (born February 26, 1994 in Rochester , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League since June 2019 and plays there in the position of defender . Previously, he was active for six seasons with the Winnipeg Jets .
Career
Trouba began his career as a hockey player in Detroit , where he played for the Detroit Compuware junior team . For the 2010/11 season, the defender was invited to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and completed 31 games for the team in the United States Hockey League in his debut season . In the following season he was the defender of his team with 18 points from 22 games.
In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft Trouba was considered one of the most promising talents and was ranked fifth of all available players in the International Scouting Services . He was eventually selected in ninth position by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round. For the 2012/13 season he moved to the University of Michigan and ran for the ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . There he scored 29 points in 37 games in his first season. Trouba was then appointed to the All-Rookie Team and the first All-Star Team of the CCHA and was named the best offensive defender in the division. After all, he was elected to the All-American team as the only freshman by the NCAA .
On April 2, 2013 Trouba signed a three-year entry-level contract with Winnipeg Jets . There he immediately succeeded in joining the team's NHL squad for the 2013/14 season . He played his first game at the season opener on October 1, 2013 against the Edmonton Oilers , where he was able to achieve both his first NHL goal and his first assist. After the defense attorney had fulfilled the contract by the summer of 2016, the restricted free agent categorically declined to continue with the Jets and asked to be transferred to another team. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Trouba was thus without a valid contract and initially suspended before agreeing on a two-year contract with the Jets at the beginning of November, which was temporarily extended for another year in summer 2018. Shortly before the contract expired, the defender was finally transferred to the New York Rangers in June 2019 , who gave Neal Pionk and a first-round right to vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to Winnipeg. With the Rangers, the defender then signed a new seven-year contract, which should bring him an average annual salary of eight million US dollars.
International
Jacob Trouba first represented the USA during his time in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he played internationally for the U17, U18 and U20 teams. He made his debut at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 , which he finished with nine points from five games as the highest point defender in the USA and won the silver medal with his team. At the U18 Junior World Championships in 2011 and 2012 , he was again in the US squad and won the gold medal in both tournaments. In the same year he also took part in the U20 Junior World Championship , but this time missed a medal and finished the tournament with his team in seventh place.
At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2013 Trouba was assistant captain of the US selection and led his team with nine points in seven games to win the gold medal. He was then named to the tournament's all-star team and named best defender. He made his debut for the men's national team in the same year at the 2013 World Cup . There he was the youngest player in the American squad and eventually won the bronze medal with the team.
He was also part of the North America team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he had two missions.
