Career
Marc Staal began his career in 2003 in the Canadian Junior League OHL with the Sudbury Wolves . After he had proven himself as a defender for two years in the OHL, he was selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers in the first round in position twelve.
But Staal initially stayed with the Sudbury Wolves and led them as team captain . He took part in the 2006 Junior World Cup with the Canadian U20 national team, won the gold medal and was voted the tournament's best defender. When he was eliminated at the end of the 2005/06 season with the Sudbury Wolves from the OHL playoffs , he was appointed to the team of the Hartford Wolf Pack , the farm team of the New York Rangers, and took part with them in the AHL playoffs.
He also completed the 2006/07 season in the OHL at Sudbury, for the first time at the side of his younger brother Jared . In January 2007 he again won the world title at the Junior World Championships . With the Wolves he reached the final of the OHL playoffs, but failed there at the Plymouth Whalers . Nevertheless, Staal was recognized as the most valuable player ( MVP ) of the playoffs and received the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award . In addition, there was the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the best defender of the OHL.
At the beginning of the 2007/08 season Staal made his debut for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL) and has been there regularly since then.
