The Sudbury Wolves are a professional Canadian ice hockey team based in Greater Sudbury , Ontario playing in the junior Ontario Hockey League .
history
Sudbury has had an ice hockey team with the nickname "Wolves" or "Cub Wolves" almost continuously since the First World War . At that time, Larry Aurie was among the ranks of the Wolves. The Sudbury Cub Wolves from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League won the George Richardson Memorial Trophy as Eastern Canadian champions in 1932 and 1935 . In 1932 they were also able to win the Memorial Cup . The team represented Canada at the World Championships in 1938 and 1949 , and won the gold medal in the former tournament.
From 1959 the Wolves played in the Eastern Professional Hockey League . Gerry Cheevers was in the goal of the team at this time.
In 1962 a team starting under the name "Sudbury Wolves" became a member of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League . In 1969 and 1971 this team won the McNamara Trophy as champions of the NOJHL. In 1972 the owners of the Sudbury Wolves from the NOJHL bought the Niagara Falls Flyers from the Ontario Hockey Association , and the two clubs were merged as "Sudbury Wolves" in the OHA.
The current Sudbury Wolves have never won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the championship of the OHL and thus never took part in the final round of the Memorial Cup . 1976 won the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the best points team of the regular season, in the same year the franchise reached the final of the OHA, but there they lost to the later Memorial Cup winner Hamilton Fincups in five games. In the early 1980s, the team was trained by Billy Harris . In 2007 the Wolves reached the OHL final again, but lost to the Plymouth Whalers .
Despite the third-longest time without a title in the entire Canadian Hockey League , the Wolves have had one of the highest attendance figures in the entire league for years in the Sudbury Community Arena , which holds 5,743 people .
