In Tampa, however, he could not really assert himself and played again and again in the farm team with the Detroit Vipers in the International Hockey League . When the Tampa Bay Lightning signed goalkeeper Nikolai Chabibulin , Mara was given up in return for the Phoenix Coyotes .
In the NHL strike season 2004/05 he played in the German Ice Hockey League for the Hanover Scorpions . After another year in Phoenix, he moved to the Boston Bruins . In February 2007, the Bruins transferred Paul Mara to the New York Rangers in exchange for Aaron Ward . On July 10, 2009, he signed a one-year contract with the Montréal Canadiens . In September 2010, Mara signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks . In February 2011, these gave him in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft to the Montreal Canadiens. After he remained without a club in the 2011/12 season, he was on the ice at the beginning of the following season with the Ontario Reign in the East Coast Hockey League . In January 2012, Mara was loaned to the Houston Eros in the American Hockey League and remained there for the remainder of the season.
After the end of his career, Mara started working as a coach. At the 2018 Winter Olympics , he was assistant coach for the United States women's national ice hockey team and won the gold medal with the team.
