The 1997 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 21, 1997 at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . In the 35th edition of the NHL Entry Draft , the teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) selected a total of 246 players in nine rounds. As a first overall draft pick , the Canadian center Joe Thornton was selected by the Boston Bruins . Patrick Marleau for the San Jose Sharks and Olli Jokinen for the Los Angeles Kings followed in second and third .
As one of the stronger vintages of the 1990s, the Entry Draft 1997 was characterized by the fact that many players in the first round of voting were able to meet the expectations placed in them. Among them are Thornton, Marleau and Marián Hossa, three players with 1000 points as well as Roberto Luongo , Eric Brewer , Sergei Samsonow , Daniel Cleary , Scott Hannan and Brenden Morrow . Notable players in the further rounds include Henrik Tallinder , Maxim Afinogenow , Jason Chimera , Brian Campbell , David Aebischer , Shawn Thornton and Andrew Ference . No actor has yet been considered in the Hockey Hall of Fame . There were also twelve additional voting rights among the 246 picks that were given to teams that had lost certain players through the Free Agency in the summer of 1996 under the Collective Bargaining Agreement .
Draft order
lottery
The draft lottery introduced in 1995 continued with the same modalities. The Boston Bruins won this as the weakest team of the past 1996/97 season , so there was no change in the order. This corresponded to the reversed final table of the previous season, but it was only the turn of all teams that had missed the playoffs. This was followed by all playoff teams, also according to their score and not influenced by the success in the post-season .

review
Except for Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau , all players of this year have finished their NHL careers. The tables show the five best players in the categories of games, goals, assists and scorer points, as well as the five goalkeepers with the most wins in the NHL. Thornton and Marleau stats are correct at the end of the 2018/19 season. In addition, 101 of the 246 selected players (approx. 41%) have played at least one NHL game.
