Brenden Blair Morrow (born January 16, 1979 in Carlyle , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger played over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Dallas Stars , which he also led for seven years as team captain. With the Canadian national team he won gold medals at the 2004 World Cup , the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2010 Olympic Games .
Career
Brenden Morrow started his career in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winter Hawks . There he played four years and was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars in the first round in 25th place. In 1998 he won the Memorial Cup with the Winter Hawks and went straight to the NHL after his senior year with the juniors.
In his first season in Dallas he reached 33 points, a mark that he only fell below in the 2006/07 season with 31 points, as he was only able to play 40 games in the regular season due to serious injuries . These statistics show that Morrow has always been a consistent and valuable source of points for the Stars. Especially in the so-called “new” NHL, it is made easier for smaller but fast and robust players like Morrow to collect points. He reached the maximum number of points in the 2005/06 season with 65 points. For this achievement and his leadership qualities, he was given a new six-year contract in the summer of 2006 and was appointed the new captain of the Dallas Stars on September 29, 2006, replacing Mike Modano in office. He was the fifth captain in the young history of the Texans.
On December 26, 2006, Morrow severed two tendons when a Chicago Blackhawks player stepped on his wrist with a skate. After a successful operation in Chicago, it took until March 18, 2007, before he could play for the stars again. On March 24, 2013, he was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins . As a free agent , he signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues in September 2013 ; as well as a year later with the Tampa Bay Lightning , with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup , but there was defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks and missed admission to the Triple Gold Club .
After the end of his contract in Tampa, Morrow did not join a new team and officially announced the end of his playing career in March 2016.
International
Morrow represented his home country at the U20 World Junior Championship in 1999 , the World Championships in 2001 , 2002 , 2004 and 2005 , the World Cup of Hockey 2004 and the 2010 Winter Olympics . At the U20 World Junior Championship in 1999, he scored one goal and seven assists. In the final he lost to Canada against Russia and won the silver medal. At the 2004 World Cup, the winger contributed four points for Canada to win the World Cup.
