Derian John Hatcher (born June 4, 1972 in Sterling Heights , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach and official who played 1178 games for the Minnesota North Stars during his active career between 1989 and 2008 , Dallas Stars , Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers played in the National Hockey League on the position of fullback . His greatest career success was celebrated by Hatcher, who was honored in 2010 when he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame for his services to ice hockey in the United States, in the service of the Dallas Stars by winning the Stanley Cup in 1999 . In addition, he won with the national team of the United States the 1996 World Cup of Hockey . His older brother Kevin was also active in the NHL.

Career

Derian Hatcher began his career in 1989 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the North Bay Centennials , where he convinced the talent scouts with his skills as a scoring defender. In the NHL Entry Draft 1990 he was selected by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League in the first round in eighth place.

After another year in the OHL, he joined the North Stars in the fall of 1991 and made his debut in the National Hockey League . In 1993 the team moved to Texas and called themselves Dallas Stars from then on . Hatcher remained loyal to the team and achieved a personal record with 31 points in the 1993/94 season , which he should achieve two more times in his career. For the 1995/96 season Hatcher was named team captain of the Dallas Stars and in 1997 he was invited to the NHL All-Star Game . The 1998/99 season was most successful when the Dallas Stars won their first Stanley Cup . He was the first native American to win the Stanley Cup as captain. In 2003, Hatcher was elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team .

In the same year his contract in Dallas ended and after twelve years for the franchise - eight years of which as captain - he decided to move to the Detroit Red Wings . There he was awarded a $ 30 million five-year contract. Due to injuries, Hatcher completed only 15 games in the 2003/04 season . The 2004/05 NHL season had to be canceled because the league, the owners of the teams and the National Hockey League Players' Association NHLPA could not agree on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement , a kind of collective agreement. Hatcher played at the time in the lower class United Hockey League for the Motor City Mechanics .

In the summer of 2005, the three parties agreed on a new collective agreement, which, however, also stated that a salary cap per team of 39 million US dollars would be introduced. In order not to violate the agreement, the Detroit Red Wings had to give up players and, among other things, paid off Derian Hatcher's contract. He signed a new four-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in August 2005 , for which he received a total of 14 million US dollars. Hatcher was named captain of the Flyers in January 2006 after the actual captain, Keith Primeau , was absent for a long time due to an injury. In the 2006/07 season he was assistant captain of the team before ending his career a year later at the age of 36.

While Derian Hatcher stood out in the junior league OHL as an attacking defender and scored 114 points in 128 games, he became known in the NHL as a defender who played very physically and was a specialist in body checks, his height of 1.96 meters and his Weight of 107 kilograms was very helpful. In 2010, like his brother Kevin , he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .

After his retirement, Hatcher worked for many years in the coaching and support staff of the Philadelphia Flyers before he acquired the Sarnia Sting franchise from the OHL in 2014 . Since the 2015/16 season he has also been the head coach of the junior team.

International

At the international level represented Hatcher, the national team of the United States at the World Championships in 1993 and 2002 , the Olympic Winter Games in 1998 in the Japanese Nagano and 2006 in the Italian Turin .

He celebrated his greatest international success by winning the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 .
