Semifinals
Record title holders Russia and Slovakia overturned the favorite Scandinavians and qualified for the final of the 66th World Cup. The "Sbornaja" "moved into a World Cup final for the first time since 1993, thanks to a 3-2 penalty shootout against vice world champions Finland. Russia's match winner was the outstanding goalkeeper Maxim Sokolow , who fought off 43 shots and then four penalties from the Finns Finns, on the other hand, who had lost in three finals in the last four world championships, continued to wait for their second title after 1995.
In an exciting game, the Finnish team was superior, especially in the first two thirds, and had better chances. But a brilliant Sokolow prevented more goals conceded than the outnumbered hits by the NHL legionnaires Jere Karalahti of the Nashville Predators and Niklas Hagman of the Florida Panthers . Somewhat surprisingly, the Russians equalized with Dmitri Satonski in the eleventh and Maxim Afinogenow in the 30th minute of the game. In the third period and in extra time, both teams played more defensively, but that didn't detract from the tension. In the shootout no Finnish player Sokolow could defeat while on the Russian side Valeri Karpov and Andrei Kovalenko the puck behind Jussi Markkanen sunk in goal.

The second semi-final game between Sweden and Slovakia also ended 3-2 after a shootout. The Slovaks managed to win again over the "Tre Kronors", who were defeated in the second round. Sweden's unsuccessfulness continues in front of its own audience - the Swedish national team also failed in the ninth attempt to win the World Cup as host.
The hosts quickly took the lead in Scandinavium, which was not sold out with almost 11,000 fans. After the team had won 2-0 with goals by Per Johan Axelsson and Thomas Johansson and allowed the Slovaks few chances, the defense in front of goalkeeper Tommy Salo got into disarray after Vladimír Országh's 2-1 in the 36th minute of the game. One minute before the end succeeded NHL player Miroslav Šatan by the Buffalo Sabers in majority of the balance. In the penalty shootout, the Swedes did not score once against Ján Lašák , while Žigmund Pálffy and Richard Lintner converted their penalties.
3rd place match
In the game to win the bronze medal, the host Swedes faced the Finnish team. After just under 22 minutes, the latter were 3-0 ahead before the Swedish team started a chase. After Johan Davidsson's goal in the 24th minute of the game, the Swedes , led by former Cologne coach Hardy Nilsson , woke up and equalized through Mattias Weinhandl and Thomas Rhodin . In the last third of the game, Rhödin and Nichlas Falk again made the decision with a shot into the empty goal. In addition to the bronze medal, the “Tre Kronors” won a premium of the equivalent of 565,000 euros. Last year's World Cup finisher, Finland, came fourth and received a prize of 544,000 euros.

final
Slovakia and the Russian team met in the final. Slovakia took the lead through Ľubomír Višňovský in the first minute and Peter Bondra increased it to 2-0 after 12 minutes . So it was after the first third and Slovakia seemed to be the favorite in this final. In the second third nothing changed significantly, because after Russia had reduced to 1: 2 through Maxim Suschinski , Miroslav Šatan restored the two-goal lead. In the last third the game of the Russians got tougher and the Slovak team was impressed by this style of play. As a result, Wladimir Antipow could initially achieve the 2: 3 and again Maxim Suschinski to equalize. But Peter Bondra scored in front of 11,591 spectators in the Scandinavium, including the Slovakian President Rudolf Schuster and Russia's Sports Minister Vyacheslav Fetissov , with a hard slap shot shortly before the end of the game, the final score 4: 3. The best players of the final were Ľubomír Višňovský and the Russian goalkeeper Maxim Sokolow awarded.
