The defender began his career as an ice hockey player at Rögle BK in his Swedish homeland, for which he played in the Elitserien for two years from 1994 to 1996 . In the 1996/97 season Tjärnqvist was under contract with Jokerit Helsinki from the Finnish SM-liiga , with whom he became the first Swede to ever win the Finnish championship . The defender played again in Sweden for Djurgården Hockey for the next two years . The Panthers, who owned the rights to the player, gave him on June 25, 1999 along with Gord Murphy , Herberts Vasiļjevs and an eight-round vote for the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Trevor Kidd to the Atlanta Thrashers . The following two years, however, Tjärnqvist continued to play for Djurgården, with whom he won the national championship title in 2000 and 2001 respectively.

In the summer of 2001, the Swede was included in the Thrashers squad for the first time and played for Atlanta in the National Hockey League for the next three years . During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he was again under contract with Djurgården from his Swedish homeland, to which he had switched on September 16, 2004 as a free agent . Also as a free agent, Tjärnqvist was hired by the Minnesota Wild in 2005 . After only a year he left Minnesota again and signed with the Edmonton Oilers . During the 2007/08 season , the defender was in the Russian Super League for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl on the ice before he was signed on July 3, 2008 as a free agent by the Colorado Avalanche . In June 2011, the defender received another contract with Djurgården Hockey from the Elitserien and signed for one season. After relegation with the club from the top Swedish division, Tjärnqvist decided to move to the Kölner Haien , with whom he signed a contract for the 2012/13 season. In January 2013, the left shooter for his part took the option to extend his contract until the summer of 2014. Following the 2014/15 season , the Haie decided to make a change in personnel due to the non-qualification for the play-offs and informed Tjärnqvist that he Despite the current contract, it no longer plays a role in the sporting planning.
