Djurgården Hockey is the ice hockey department of the Swedish sports club Djurgårdens Idrottsförening , which was founded in 1922 and has won 16 Swedish championship titles in its history .

history

In 1922, an ice hockey section was set up in the Djurgårdens IF association . There were only 6 players on the team, but that was not unusual at the time. In the following years one could strengthen personnel and in 1926 one won the Swedish championship for the first time. After many players had ended their careers in 1934, the ice hockey section was closed until further notice. A new team was not formed until four years later.

Elitserien duel against the Malmö Redhawks

After 1950 one of the most successful phases of the club began. Of the eight championship titles won by 1970, six were fought in direct succession between 1958 and 1963. During this time there were 8 to 9 players from the team in the Swedish national team . After that it took almost 20 years until the next championship title was won. The start of the newly established Elitserien failed and so Djurgårdens IF rose in 1976. A year later the team was first class again and even made it to the final, where they lost to MoDo AIK .

The following time was marked by constant ups and downs. In addition to the championship titles of 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1991, there were also seasons in which participation in the Kvalserien , which decided whether to remain in the top division, could be prevented. The year 1990 was most successful when the team won the European Cup . A year later you could defend this title with a 7: 3 in the final against the Düsseldorfer EG , although you only came second in the state championship.

At the beginning of the current century two more championship titles were achieved, mainly due to a new style of play called torpedo hockey .
