In 1922 an ice hockey section was set up in the club. There were only 6 players on the team, but that was not unusual at the time. In the following years, the section increased in personnel and in 1926 they won the Swedish championship for the first time. After many players had ended their careers in 1934, the ice hockey section was closed until further notice. A new team was not formed until four years later. After 1950 one of the most successful phases of the club began. Of the eight championship titles won by 1970, six were fought in direct succession between 1958 and 1963. During this time, eight to nine players belonged to the Swedish national team .

The start of the newly established Elitserien was completely unsuccessful and Djurgården was relegated to Allsvenskan in 1976. A year later the team was first class again and even made it to the final, where they lost to MoDo AIK . In addition to the championship titles of 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1991, there were also seasons in which you could barely prevent participation in the qualifying games that decided on staying in the top division. The most successful game year 1990/91 was when the team won the European Cup . A year later you could defend this title with a 7: 3 in the final against the Düsseldorfer EG , although you only came second in the state championship.
