The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1990 season was the 26th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1990; the final was played in December 1990. A total of 20 teams took part. Djurgårdens IF Stockholm won the title for the first time and ended the longstanding Soviet dominance in the European Cup.
Mode and participants
The national champions of the game year 1989/90 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played with a preliminary round in two groups of three and four in a simple mode. Then eight teams in two groups of four played the participants in the final tournament. The Swedish and Soviet champions Djurgårdens IF Stockholm and Dynamo Moscow were directly qualified for the semifinals.

Preliminary round
The preliminary round of the European Cup was played in four groups from October 19 to 21, 1990. The venues were Sofia in Bulgaria , Bozen in Italy , Rødovre in Denmark and Rouen in France . The respective group winners reached the semi-finals.

The semi-finals of the European Cup were played in two groups from November 16-18, 1990. The venues were the Resega in Switzerland Porza and the Brehmstraße in German Dusseldorf . The respective group winners and runners-up reached the final tournament.

The Swedish champions Djurgårdens IF Stockholm prevailed 3-2 in the final against the national champions of the Soviet Union Dynamo Moscow and were the first team from Sweden to win the European Cup. The long-standing Soviet dominance came to an end when Dynamo's defeat in the final, after city rivals CSKA Moscow had won the competition from 1977/78 to 1989/90 .
