The AS Aris , full name: Athlitikos Syllogos Aris , (German:, sports club Aris' Greek Α.Σ. Άρης , complete: Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Άρης ), commonly known as Aris Thessaloniki and Aris Salonika known is from Thessaloniki derived sports club , who has several successful departments.
history
On the Greek National Day, March 25, 1914 , 22 young people came together with the intention of founding a new sports club. Herakles was the namesake of the then largest sports club in the city, Iraklis Saloniki . The newly founded association also adapted an Olympic deity as patron, the god of war Ares . In the coat of arms there is the image of the statue of Ares Ludovisi (see photo). Yellow and black were adopted from the flag of the Orthodox Church as the club colors.
The development of the young sports club was hampered by the outbreak of the First World War and its subsequent war on Greek soil. The football department that was founded first was followed in 1922 by other basketball, volleyball and water polo teams.
The Aris sports club now has departments in over 15 sports. The best-known are those of football and basketball, which have been spun off from the parent club over the years. Other teams with the name Aris Saloniki can be found in the competitions of the national athletics, ice hockey and baseball championships.

Men's
In the summer of 1978 Giannis Ioannidis ended his playing career. In his 19 years as a professional (1959-1978) he only played for the Aris basketball club. In order to honor him, the board of the club made it possible for him to take the post of vacated head coach for the following season. Under the direction of the new coach Ioannidis, the club won its second basketball championship in over 40 years. Charis Papageorgiou, captain of that team, led his team to the top of the table with 924 points in 26 league games, of which Aris lost only two. A Pyrrhic victory for the then 26-year-old Greek. An injury to the Achilles tendon, which he sustained in the course of the competition, forced him to sit out the following season. The trainer also cleared his chair and accepted an offer from GS Larisa . Far away from these events, college graduate Nikos Galis , son of Greek immigrants in the USA, signed up for the 1979 NBA draft and was chosen as the 68th pick by the Boston Celtics , which also signed him. In the training camp of the Celtics, the rookie injured his ankle, which led the club management to terminate the Greek's contract and replace him with Gerald Henderson. The now clubless Galis was then courted by various teams from Greece. After turning down offers from Panathinaikos and Olympiakos , Galis decided to pursue a professional career with reigning champions Aris. After recovering from injury, Galis made his debut in the A Ethniki on December 2, 1979 against local rivals Iraklis , who could be defeated with 79:78 points.
In his first game he got 30 points. His consistently good performance led Aris to third place and Galis himself, despite missed games at the beginning of the season, also to third place among the best throwers in the league. The top scorer of the 1979/80 season was Panagiotis Giannakis from Ionikos Nikea. Both players developed into leadership players in their respective teams. For the following season on January 24, 1981 both teams met in Nikea . The game ended with 114: 113 points in extra time for Aris. Giannakis scored 73 points for Nikea and Galis 62 for Thessaloniki. Again Aris finished the season in third place, and Galis became the best thrower in the league. After finishing second in the 1981/82 season, coach Ioannidis, whose contract in Larisa had expired, returned to Thessaloniki. Again he coached his team for the 1983 title. A year later, Aris and Panathinaikos ended the season with the same number of points. A playoff should determine the champion of the 1983/84 season. With 39 points, Galis was the best thrower of the encounter, but these were not enough to secure the championship. Aris was defeated by the Athens team with 76:80 points. A week earlier they also lost in the cup final against local rivals PAOK with 70:74 points. So they finished second in both competitions. In the same summer Giannakis decided to leave the Ionikos, with whom he had played since his youth. Courted by Greece's top teams, Aris managed to secure the transfer. While the specialist press wondered whether two individual leaders could play in a club team, one of the most dominant constellations was formed that would shape Greek basketball for years.
From the 1984/85 season Aris was serial champions of Greece seven times in a row and Galis was top scorer of the league each time. After Galis and Giannakis left the team in the early 1990s, Aris' dominance broke. The two departures ended the club's most successful period for the time being.

Men's
The AS Aris volleyball team experienced their most successful decade in the 1990s. After the club had secured the runner-up twice (1994, 1996), the team also succeeded in 1997 to provide the Greek champions. Internationally, the team previously reached the Final Fours of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1993 and 1995. Both times, however, they missed the opportunity to move into the final, and did not get past fourth place in the small final either.

Ladies
The department, which was founded in 1926, stopped playing within a few years and reactivated the department for women in 1971. Their most successful season so far in the A1 Gynekion, the top division for women in Greece, was played by the club in the 2017/18 season when it managed to reach the final of the championship, in which they were then defeated by the women of Olympiacos and thus by Runner-up.
Water polo
The club established a department for water polo in 1925. Its first team secured the following two city championships in 1926 and 1927. A year later, the first official Panhellenic championship was held, in the final of which the men of AS Aris were able to defeat Olympiacos and thus crowned themselves the first Greek champions. In the final of the second championship in 1929, they defeated the Ethnikos Piraeus and successfully defended the title. Also in the third edition, the Greek champions were called AS Aris, whereas in the final of 1931 they had to admit defeat to the Ethnikos Piraeus. Another time they secured the championship in 1932. In the meantime, the first players in the team had already ended their active careers, and the dominance of AS Aris was beginning to crumble. Although they continued to play an important role, the successes of the legendary first team could not be repeated to this day. You lose your connection to the top when the championship is resumed after the Second World War . In 1960 one descends for the first time from the first division. After further promotions and relegations, the club found itself in the fourth Greek league for the 2015/16 season.
