Iraklis Saloniki (Greek Ηρακλής, in German Herakles ) is a Greek sports club that includes a basketball , football and volleyball department . The association, founded in 1908, is one of the most historic in Greece and, alongside Aris and PAOK, is one of the three major associations in the second largest Greek city of Thessaloniki .
history
Iraklis emerged from the music association Omilos Filomouson, founded in 1899. In 1903 the members decided to expand their activities to include sports. Initially, swimming and cycling were added, followed by soccer from 1905 . The first official game was played on April 23 of the same year. In 1906 the club took part in the demonstration tournament as part of the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens . Even since no personal goal was achieved, only 4th and last place in the final ranking remained. The official founding year of Iraklis Thessaloniki is 1908, when the merger with the Olympia Thessaloniki association took place. The first president of the association was the doctor A. Maltos.
basketball
The basketball department of Iraklis was founded in 1928 and secured the first Greek championship in its first year of existence , before the second title followed seven years later.
Since then, the club has been a fixture in the top Greek league for two years. Iraklis always held a strong position - but to this day it has not been possible to step out of the shadow of its two city rivals and the Athens teams.
The most important players wearing the Iraklis jersey include the three European champions from 2005 Nikolaos Chatzivrettas , Dimitrios Diamantidis and Lazaros Papadopoulos as well as Eleutherios Kakiousis, Roy Tarpley, Christos Tsekos, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Jurij Zdovc .
The 2005/2006 season was a low point in the club's history. After a lot of bloodletting, the newly formed team did not manage to maintain the class and was relegated to the A2 league.
