Men
In volleyball , the Greek men's championship is determined in the so-called A1 league. This professional league consists of twelve teams. The first eight teams (until 2016 the first 4) qualify for the play-offs , at the end of which the Greek champions will be determined. The four remaining teams determine who were relegated to the A2 league via play-outs . The last two teams were relegated by 2016.
After 65 championships so far, Olympiacos is the record champion with 28 titles won.

The first volleyball championship in Greece was held in the years 1935-1936 under the name Panelliniο Protathlima (Πανελλήνιο Πρωτάθλημα) . Since the 1968-1969 season, Greece's top division has been called Ethniko Protathlima (Εθνικό Πρωτάθλημα) .

Women
In the Greek women's volleyball league A1, the championship is currently played among twelve teams. After 22 match days with a round-trip round, the last two of the rating are relegated to the A2 league. The first four teams qualify for the play-offs at the end of which the Greek champions emerge.
After 49 championships so far, Panathinaikos Athens is the reigning record champion with 24 titles won.
