The Oskol ( Russian Оскол ) or Oskil ( Ukrainian Оскіл ) is a 472 km long left tributary of the Siversky Donets in Ukraine and Russia .
The Oskol rises on the Central Russian Plate in the Kursk Oblast . It flows mainly in a southerly direction. It flows through the Russian Oblast Belgorod and the Ukrainian Oblast Kharkiv . Coming from Stary Oskol , the Oskol flows into the Oskilsk reservoir, which is up to 130 km² in size, and flows twelve kilometers below the associated hydroelectric power station on the left into the Siversky Donets , where it briefly forms the border with Donetsk Oblast in the lower reaches . The river has a length of 472 kilometers and its catchment area covers 14,800 km². Within the Ukraine it covers 178 kilometers and the catchment area here is 5,511 km². The Oskol is mainly fed by the snowmelt . The river floods between late March and early May . 9.5 km above the mouth, the mean discharge (MQ) is 44.2 m³ / s.
