Nowy Oskol ( Russian Новый Оскол ) is a city in the Belgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 19,530 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 110 km east of the oblast capital Belgorod on the left bank of the Oskol , a left tributary of the Seversky Donets, which flows into the Don .
Nowy Oskol is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
Nowy Oskol was founded in 1637 as Stojaly Ostrog in the course of the Belgorod fortification line along what was then the southern border of the Russian Empire.
From 1647 Ostrog named after Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Zarjow-Alexeyev , but since 1655 Novy Oskol (after the river; Russian for New Oskol , to delineate the previously existing upriver mounting Oskol , today city Stary Oskol , so Old Oskol ).
In 1779 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds).
During the Second World War , Nowy Oskol was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 3, 1942 and recaptured on January 28, 1943 by troops of the Voronezh Front of the Red Army while advancing towards Belgorod.

Culture and sights
In the village of Velikomichailowka in Novy Oskol district is the Museum of the First Cavalry Army , which operated in this area under Semyon Budyonny during the Russian Civil War .
economy
In Nowy Oskol there are companies in the food industry and building materials industry.
The city lies on the railway line Moscow - Jelez - Waluiki - Donets Basin, opened on this section in 1897 (route km 678).
The regional road R185 Belgorod - Korotscha - Alexejewka - Rossosch runs through Nowy Oskol , from which the R187 branches off via Waluiki to Rowenki and the R188 to Stary Oskol.
