Gubkin ( Russian Губкин ) is a district town with 88,560 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in southwestern Russia , in Belgorod Oblast . It is located about 500 km south of Moscow , 180 km north of the Ukrainian city of Kharkov and 100 km northeast of the regional capital Belgorod , on the Oskolez river . The closest town is Stary Oskol , which is 19 km east of Gubkin.

history

The city was founded in the 1930s in the area of ​​the villages of Korobkowo and Saltykowo in connection with the beginning development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly , a huge iron ore deposit in southwestern Russia. It received its name in honor of the geologist Iwan Gubkin (1871-1939) when it was granted the status of an urban-type settlement in 1939. In 1955, Gubkin received city rights.

Gubkin is still a center of mining , which is mostly operated above ground. Raw material processing, the building material and food industries play an important role.

Education and culture

Gubkin owns a branch of the Moscow State Open University and a Polytechnic. There is a museum in the city about the history of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly .
