history
At the end of the 16th century, the southern Russian steppe was conquered by Tsar Peter the Great , and villages were founded to protect against attacks, including Rossosh, which was first mentioned in a document in 1721. Up until the 19th century, Rossosh was a village that had around 5,500 inhabitants in the 1850s.
In the later 19th century, especially after the completion of the railway from Voronezh to Rostov-on-Don in 1871, the place developed into a local center for trade in agricultural products. A little later, industrialization began here with the construction of a sugar factory .
During the Second World War , a successful offensive of the Red Army against the German Wehrmacht took place in January 1943 in the Ostrogoschsk / Rossosch area . Previously, the city was temporarily under German control and was heavily damaged in numerous air raids, which were primarily intended to hit the local railway junction.
