geography

Semiluki is the western satellite city of the oblast capital Voronezh and is only about 10 km from the city center. The city is located on the Central Russian Plate on the right bank of the Don .

Semiluki is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

The city lies on the Kursk – Voronezh railway line , which crosses the Don here.

history

Semiluki was first mentioned as a village in Voronezh city documents in 1615. The name is derived from the toponym U semi luk , in Russian literally at the seven river bends , ie “several river bends of the Don”.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a large part of the population was employed in the limestone and sandstone quarries in the area. A station settlement was created in connection with the opening of the railway line in 1894.

The old village and the station settlement gradually grew together. In 1929 a large plant for refractory materials was created ; In 1931 the place became the administrative center of a Rajons.

During the Second World War , Semiluki was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 4, 1942 and recaptured on January 25, 1943 by troops of the Voronezh Front of the Red Army . During the war, 90 percent of the place was destroyed, especially since the front line ran in the immediate vicinity for six months, in the urban area of Voronezh.

In connection with the rebuilding of the refractory materials plant, which had been destroyed in the war, Semiluki was granted town charter in 1954.
