history
Since the middle of the 17th century, a military settlement of a regiment stationed in Ostrogoschsk existed at the confluence of the Ossered in the Don .
In 1709, on Ukas Peter the Great , the Voronezh shipyard was relocated to this place and the construction of a fortress began. This year is the founding year of the place. The place was called Sereda , Ossered or Osserezkaja after the various names for the tributary at that time .
In 1711 the garrison of the Pauls fortress (Russian Pavlovskaya krepost ) at Taganrog on the north bank of the Azov Sea was relocated to here. Since then, the new fortress has also been called that, and the surrounding town has been called Pavlovsk accordingly .
In the first half of the 18th century, the fortress was an important part of the defense system along the southern border of the empire, the place was considered a city. A palace for the tsar was built in the city; Until 1739 there was a cannon factory, until 1770 there was a powder factory. After that, the city lost its military and economic importance. Most of the older structures were lost in fires and floods.
In 1779, Pavlovsk became the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Voronezh governorship , which later became the Voronezh governorate .
During the Second World War , the Don represented the front line in the area of the city of Pavlovsk from July 1942. In January 1943, the German Wehrmacht was moved by troops of the Voronezh Front of the Red Army as part of Operation Ostrogoschsk-Rossosh from the Don and thus the city limits of Pavlovsk to the west pushed back.
