geography

The city lies on the eastern edge of the Volga plate , on the Chopjor (a tributary of the Don ), which divides the city into two parts. While one side resembles a Central Russian village due to its predominantly single-storey, rural houses, the other side of the river is characterized by mostly two- or three-storey, sometimes multi-storey prefabricated Soviet-style prefabricated buildings .

The city is also a railway junction and is located between the Tambov - Kamyshin and Poworino - Penza lines . There are three train stations in the city: Balaschow-1, Balaschow-2 and Balaschow-Pass. The Balashov station was built by the Ryazan-Ural Railway Company (Рязано-Уральская железная дорога) during the construction of the Tambov - Kamyshin railway line.

history

Balaschow emerged in the 18th century as a village called Balaschowo (named after the family name of the then local owner) and received city status in 1780. In the 19th century, the place was important for the trade in grain, among other things.

In 1954, Balashov became the administrative seat of an oblast of the same name in the RSFSR , which had been formed from parts of the Oblasts Saratov , Stalingrad , Voronezh and Tambov and was dissolved again in 1957.
