Atkarsk ( Russian Атка́рск ) is a Russian city with 25,624 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Saratov Oblast . It is located around 92 km northwest of the regional capital Saratov , at the confluence of the Atkara River in the Medveditsa , a left tributary of the Don .
history
Since 1358 existed at the site of the present town already a settlement of the Tartars . In 1702, tsarist Russia established a military outpost with a settlement at the Atkara estuary, which was named after the river. In the beginning, mainly soldiers lived there who, in addition to guarding the outpost, also worked in agriculture . In 1774 the settlement was taken by Pugachev rebels, later it was liberated and in 1780 it received official city rights with the establishment of the Saratov governorate . At the beginning of the 19th century Atkarsk had around 1200 inhabitants.
Until well into the 19th century Atkarsk was a very poor city, with almost no industry and purely agricultural. At the end of the 19th century, railroad construction brought an upswing when Atkarsk got a train station on the newly built line from Tambov to Saratov. This caused a considerable influx of railway workers, merchants and craftsmen, so that in 1907 around 13,000 people were already living in Atkarsk. With the railway connection, the importance of Atkarsk as a transshipment point for the grain trade also grew, which brought the city economic importance.
Even after the October Revolution , Atkarsk retained its importance as a trading center for agricultural products. Since 1928 Atkarsk has been the administrative center of Atkarsk Raion, which was founded that year.
In the city there was a prisoner of war camp 338 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War . Seriously ill were cared for in prisoner-of-war hospital 5131 .
