history
Kalininsk was founded as a village called Balanda in 1680 by Ukrainian settlers, which is why a relatively large number of ethnic Ukrainians live here (around 12% of the city's population). In the 18th century, the village belonged to the Sheremetev family, known in Russia . Their former country house near Kalininsk has been preserved to this day as a historical and architectural monument.
In 1939 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement. In 1962 it got city rights and was renamed Kalininsk. It was named after the politician Mikhail Kalinin , in whose honor a number of places (including Kalinin and Kaliningrad ) were named or renamed during the Soviet era .
