Novousensk ( Russian: Новоузенск ) is a city in Saratov Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,011 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 200 km southeast of the Oblast capital Saratov near the border with Kazakhstan at the mouth of the Chertanly River in the Great Usen (Bolshoi Usen) on the left bank.

Nowousensk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The city lies on the railway line to Alexandrow Gai , which branches off in Krasny Kut from the line Saratov - Astrakhan .

history

In 1760 the old Orthodox founded the village of Tschertanla on the site of the present-day town , named after the river of the same name (in Turkish, for example, for pike river ). In 1835 the place received the city charter under the name Nowy Usen ( Neu-Usen ; in contrast to the Usen fortress located further upstream on the Bolshoi Usen ). It was later renamed Novousensk .

economy

Nowousensk is the center of an agricultural area with predominantly grain cultivation. Companies in the food industry are based on this. There is also building materials industry.
