Petrowsk ( Russian Петровск ) is a city in the Russian Oblast of Saratov . Petrovsk is a city subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Petrovsk Raion . The city has around 31,160 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
Geographical location
Petrovsk is located on the banks of the Medveditsa in the north of Saratov Oblast, about five kilometers from the border with Penza Oblast and about 104 km northwest of the regional capital Saratov . The nearest city is Atkarsk 56 km southwest of Petrovsk.
history
As early as the 17th century, a village and an important trading center were built on the site of today's Petrovsk. In 1698 the city was fortified due to a decree by Peter the Great to secure the border against incursions by the Crimean Tatars . Legend has it that Peter the Great visited the city as early as 1707, only shortly after it was founded. The settlement was finally named Petrovsk in honor of Peter the Great. In 1780 the place received city rights.

traffic
The city is on the Sennoi - Rtishchevo railway line . The station is called Petrovsk-Saratov to avoid confusion with the stations of the cities of Petrovsk ( Transbaikalia region ) and Petrovskoye ( Yaroslavl Oblast ).
Furthermore, a Russian trunk road from Saratov to Penza runs through the city.
