Petrowsk-Sabaikalski ( Russian Петровск-Забайкальский ) is a city in the Transbaikalia region ( Russia ) with 18,549 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in a depression between the foothills of the Sagan and Zagan-Churtei ridges, which belong to the Transbaikal low mountain ranges , about 410 km west of the Oblast capital Chita , at the confluence of the Kischa river with the Baljaga , a smaller right tributary of the Chilok .

The city of Petrowsk-Sabaikalski is administratively directly subordinate to the region and at the same time the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

Petrovsk-Sabaikalski is the station of the Trans-Siberian Railway ( Petrovsky Zavod station , route km 5784 from Moscow ). The M55 Irkutsk- Chita road runs past the city to the west.

history

In 1789, on the basis of the iron ore deposits, at the instigation of Catherine the Great, the Petrowski Sawod ironworks ( Peter works or smelter , named after Peter the Great ) with an associated settlement of the same name. The ores were extracted underground.

After the uprising of 1825, 71 leading Decembrists were exiled to Petrovsky Zavod , including Prince Sergei Trubetskoi . Alexander Pushkin refers to it in his well-known poem Mission to Siberia ( In the depths of Siberian ores ... ).

In 1926 the place was given city rights under the name Petrowsk-Sabaikalski (about Transbaikalisches Petrowsk , to distinguish it from Petrowsk in the Saratov Oblast ), in 1940 a new ironworks was opened.

Culture, education and sights

In 1980 a Decembrist museum was opened in the house of Ekaterina Trubetskaya , who had voluntarily followed her husband into exile. A plaque at the station commemorates the exiled Decembrists. Several of them, including Ivan Gorbachevsky , are buried in the local cemetery.

In Petrovsk-Sabaikalsky there is a medical and an educational institute.

economy

In addition to the ironworks, there was a glassworks in Petrovsk, which was closed, as well as food and forestry businesses.
